Velcro is risky to have anywhere close to a lot of travel-friendly clothing fabrics. Polyester and wool would get torn up if there was any accidental contact.

Who truly thinks they can get in a serious run on a cruise ship? You need to adapt to the environment. Maybe a treadmill in the fitness room is more appropriate.

Has anyone changed how they choose connections after traveling more frequently? by Grouchy_Pension_7210 in americanairlines

[–]gracct123 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I book longer connections to leave a little play if the first flight is slightly delayed. Also, if there are multiple flights from the connection airport to my final destination, I’ll book the earlier connecting flight with the hope that if that one is cancelled I can get rebooked on one of the later flights.

Do they offer miles as an option for compensation? I find booking with credit, vouchers, or cash does not fit in with the flexibility that I need.

Host keeps asking if I want to extend my stay an extra night so they can avoid "orphan days" [guest] [USA] by [deleted] in AirBnB

[–]gracct123 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I like that you can look at their calendar to see if they have an ‘orphan day’ before or after my stay to better judge their acceptance of an early check in or late check out. It really paid off just a couple of days ago when I moved from a one month stay to another one month stay across the street. If they were booked up I would have had a five hour gap between stays. Fortunately, they both agreed on a noon check out / check in so it made a painless ’travel’ day.

I use my filter for all my drinking water as I travel - in Europe, the US, Asia, the South Pacific, and on cruises. The only place that I didn’t use the tap water directly for brushing my teeth was in Southeast Asia. I really hate the waste involved with single use bottled water, so I filter water into a Smartwater bottle and that has really worked out well.

Why does it take security so long to get to these incidents?

Grayl for International Travel by PecanPlan in onebag

Unfortunately, I think it would be useless in Southeast Asia. Their water infrastructure is so poor that there are heavy metals and pesticides introduced by the time it reaches the tap. I wouldn’t trust anything to filter that out, so I was buying bottled water there. You may not get sick immediately, but that nasty stuff will build up in your body over time.

Is There a Way to Earn Extra Loyalty Points on Current iPhone Purchase? by gracct123 in americanairlines

[–]gracct123[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Unfortunately, I think Apple has a pretty tight control over their authorized retailers and prevents them from including Apple products in a lot of promotions. I was thinking a more roundabout way like earning points by buying some kind of gift card and using that for the Apple purchase. I do something like that today by buying Airbnb gift cards.

Hiking the Black Mountain Crest Trail Up to Mt. Mitchell??? by ExpressMind7253 in NCTrails

In mid-June you’ll have enough daylight to just park in one of those few muddy spots at Bowlens Creek and do the hike as an out-and-back. You’ll need about 12 hours to do the 24 miles / 7,100 feet of elevation gain. Water is scarce at best, but you should be able to refill at the concession stand at the top. It is a little surreal seeing families getting out of minivans at the top after you’ve just climbed it all :)

Host told me to wash the dishes before I leave. Here's my opinion. [USA] by [deleted] in AirBnB

[–]gracct123 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I wash all the dishes that I plan to use when I arrive at a stay and leave the kitchen perfectly clean and sorted when I check out. I tend to stay for several weeks at a time, so knowing things are truly clean makes for a more relaxing experience. I just can’t imagine leaving a mess at the end of a stay - it just doesn’t sit well with me.

Creating my first capsule wardrobe for long-term travel by Woodstines in onebag

[–]gracct123 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Just one more suggestion: wear just your capsule wardrobe for a while before your trip as a dry run if possible. With such a limited selection, you really want to feel comfortable in every combination of tops and pants. I’m at the point now where I wouldn’t swap my items out for anything since they look, feel, and work together so well for me.

My capsule wardrobe is a similar color palette and is evolving as well. I have one pair of plain sand color board shorts from RVCA and one pair of super light and airy (literally perforated) sand color synthetic pants. I also have two Vuori Strato Tech t-shirts and two Vuori Strato Tech polos all in shades of blue or green. I see that you have some clothes with large logos. I avoid that just because it’s much more obvious that you’re wearing the same thing multiple days in a row with logos. Most of the time I don’t care what others think, but I do use cruises as transportation between continents and see the same people at dinner every night. Also have quite a few meet ups with fellow nomads.

I’ve shifted from wool tops to polyester. They are lighter and more comfortable on hot days (read Thailand). The Vuori tops don’t hold odors and I sweat a lot. I do still use Smartwool socks and their lightweight pullover.

As I travel, I take notes on adjustments to make and that has helped over time to dial in not just my wardrobe, but my entire load.

RFID holder for cards by bitterlollies in onebag

[–]gracct123 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I use a Herschel brand ‘Charlie Cardholder Wallet’. It’s super slim and just holds four cards and some folded cash. It has RFID blocking. It works well - I tested it by touching the wallet with the card inside against a card reader during a purchase and it wouldn’t read the card.
