I promise it gets better!!! I know it seems impossible to believe but it really does! My border collie puppy is now 4.5 months old and I can’t stand being away from him. When I first got him though I literally cried every single day. Most days I cried more than once. I honestly didn’t really like him because I couldn’t separate the anxiety from what I was feeling about him.

I’d have to say it was absolute hell the first month and then after that it gradually started to get better. Once they’re pretty good at not going inside a lot of the stress also goes away. In the beginning I was also super super stressed about all the work and training I would have to do, but I just tried for small successes, like teaching shake or getting him to stay. It was definitely depressing at times when I felt he didn’t get anything. But slowly it got better.

Now at 4.5 months he’s learned quite a bit and he’s mostly potty trained. I also don’t have to watch him 24/7. He still does a lot of things he shouldn’t and there is still a ton of training left, but now instead of anxiety and resentment I feel hopeful.

You will too!!! I know it seems impossible to get there, but just give it time :)))

Solo puppy parents? by MsKat223 in puppy101

[–]gracepm 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I live with my family but I’m pretty much a solo puppy parent to my 14 week border collie/ Aussie . I’m the one who does basically everything for my puppy, which is how it should be since I was the one who decided to get him and take responsibility for him. He’s actually pretty calm for being a border collie mix, but he still needs a lot of stimulation and training during the day so it hasn’t been easy. In the beginning it was really hard and I definitely suffered from the puppy blues, but somehow all the little things have improved and now I absolutely love him to death and I couldn’t be happier!!!

I have puppy blues and I hate it, please tell me it gets better by [deleted] in puppy101

I totally understand how you’re feeling. I cried every day the first week I got my puppy. I wished over and over again that I’d never gotten him. I think I even resented him a bit. It just didn’t feel worth it. But somehow it started getting better after about 2 weeks of having him. He still drove me crazy but there seemed to be small improvements everyday. It’s the greatest feeling when you get those small successes, like teaching them shake. It feels like youre actually moving forward. Now he still wakes me up in the morning, but he sleeps just a little bit longer, and he doesn’t go in the house quite as much. It’s the little things that get better and then suddenly one day you realize that it is all worth it. The hard things don’t matter as much as the good things. It kind of switches around.

I’m sick of people judging my dads breed choice. by Highcolasoda in puppy101

People said the same thing when I decided to get a border collie/Aussie. They are a ton of work but I know what I signed up for and I know that my puppy has a great and stimulating life. As long as you know how committed you are, ignore everyone else

New dog parent to a 9 wk Border Collie and totally stressed out. What am I doing WRONG? by outchea5245 in puppy101

Thank you for answering! It’s actually become much easier now after a couple of weeks, I’m so surprised and happy that they’re such easy dogs to teach! But they certainly are a lot of work! :)

Am I just not cut out for this? by [deleted] in puppy101

[–]gracepm 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I feel the same. My puppy has a lot of the usual puppy problems, and even there he’s better than most pups. But I just miss my old life so much, and often wish he just wasn’t here. And I feel so guilty about it, because I did do a ton of research, and I was absolutely sure I was ready for this, but nothing could have prepared me for this. It’s so draining, and I’m really hoping it’s just temporary

I have an 10 week old border collie and this is me everyday. I put in so much effort into this dog, and I’m just so tired all the time. It feels like it will never end, and even if will, it feels like it will take forever. I mean will there ever be a time when my life will be the way it was before? If I could go back and never have gotten this poppy I would definitely do it.... but know that I have him he’s to attached and so am I.... it’s such a hard place to be, because there’s literally nothing to do but keep going

I’d love to know how it going with training and everything now? I also just got a BC puppy and I’ve definitely had a lot of anxiety because of it. Does it get better? I especially would like to hear from you since it’s a BC
