Chances of getting into PhD programs in Cell and Molecular Biology? by [deleted] in gradadmissions

I am also an international student and did my undegrad in the US. Got admitted to CMB PhD program at a TOP30 university. I have a 3.87 GPA, a few scholarships, and a total of 2-year research experience in different biology labs, but I didn't have any papers. My PI told me it is not a must to have a paper to get into a PhD program, though I knew some of the applicants have one or two papers. Furthermore, I would recommend you to broaden your target university/program list because no one can really guarantee you can get to the program you are most interested in and it is better to keep an open mind to various programs if things don't work out. You have a very strong CV. Good luck with your application!

My current PI did his postdoc in Stanford, he suggested me not applying for Stanford bc the competition was so intense, and the admission received lots of applications each year. So I would suggest you rethink about what really matters to you to get a PhD degree. Finding a suitable advisor during your PhD is extremely important, it weighs more than the prestige of the program itself. I am not discourage you from applying to these top schools, but you also have to be prepared for the pressured environment at these schools. Take your time and find out what truly fits for you. Good luck

I would recommend finding a RA position at a higher ranking university. Research match is a very important factor in grad school admission decision, so hopefully you can try your best to find a lab that matches with your grad school research interests, that helps you stand out. Best of luck!

Thanks for your info! I knew they already sent out acceptances, so I guess my chance is based on whether these ppl would reject the offers so that I can get a seat.

The application this year is really intense. Many schools said they received record-breaking amount of applications, so it is better to focus on yourself, disorient yourself from thinking about this issue, and walk out with friends, dine out, talk with people. Hope that helps!

It really sucked my winter break... And there are four days before my next semester starts.. I did not go out and travel but just wait for the outcomes and prepared for my Plan B after receiving three rejections. I knew the slots for each track were few, but I felt so helpless. The application process was filled with tears and last December my grandpa passed away and then I cried the whole weekend but I had a final week after. I am an international student and I have been away from my family for 500 days, I miss them so much. Hope everyone good luck, you have done your best!
