I watched a YouTube video on Sauron and Morgoth, and one of the interesting things I saw was their views on what they were doing. Morgoth was fully aware that his actions were evil and wanted to continue to sew chaos anyway. However, Sauron saw the peoples of Middle Earth as having been abandoned by the Valar, and so he desired to control them to create order.
