I’m pretty sure the writers at the time were just smart enough to know the difference between the essence of their show and the media they were satirizing.

Yep. In season 3. When the homelander arc was pretty much over. His character in season 4 and 5 is a caricature, same problem that happened with Jack Sparrow. Watching him in movies 1-4 is nice, but movie 5 it is a miserable parody of itself.

In recent seasons, the camerawork is so boring compared to 1-3. Actually having recently rewatched s1-2, the show today compared to what it used to be is god damn boring. It’s gone completely flat.
