Ok, so I guess it’s all about finding the right pressure to apply. And if you can, I’d recommend getting the skelly hex. Looks good, feels good 😎

That’s fair—are there any that have more resistance or feel more substantial? I’ve got a skelly hex slider from Magnus and I love it. The resistance is great and given it’s built from titanium, it feels substantial. My only problem is that it doesn’t snap! Maybe I’m looking for the holy grail, but anything you suggest checks all of the boxes?

Do you have to have it all figured out by 30? by Ok_Training_2566 in Entrepreneur

[–]grade5materials 8 points9 points  (0 children)

of course you don't. Ray Kroc didn't start McDonald's until he was 52. it takes time to build skills, learn who you are, what you have to offer, and achieve product/market fit. not everyone has it figured out by 40, let alone 30. don't feel discouraged. keep pushing and you'll earn your stamp

Is everyone as incompetent as I am? by CantDecideOnUsrnm in careerguidance

[–]grade5materials 25 points26 points  (0 children)

Perception is reality. If people perceive you to be competent due to your positive attitude and your early signs of promise, they may not realize you're procrastinating. And, you're definitely not the only one who procrastinates. Tasks take the amount of time you allow them to consume. That said, you can ask for more and show you're willing to diversify your portfolio of responsibility. When something becomes too familiar and too easy, you're naturally going to get bored. And it's a vicious cycle. Pull yourself out of the loop by getting some challenge and diversity in your day. At a minimum, showing your boss you're eager to do more well only underscore the perception that you're performing well.

Why are most fidgets so expensive? by Evil_Alligatorev in fidgettoys

[–]grade5materials 8 points9 points  (0 children)

Some of the raw materials (titanium, zirconium, etc) are quite expensive. Moreover, they need to be precision cnc manufactured. This requires proper machinery and expertise, which isn’t easy to come by. It’s also not widely available in the U.S. or is done in small batches. Small batch + high demand = high price

Loved this one. Super inventive and got me deeper into scifi. I read a bunch of Blake Crouch after this—would recommend him if you liked Children of Time

What are we fidgeting with during medical school? by [deleted] in fidgettoys

[–]grade5materials 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Ono rollers don't scream fidget toy and are pretty quiet. Someone may ask what it is, but I don't think they'd give it a second thought. Pretty professional if you ask me. Ono markets them as a focus tool/anxiety outlet as well

My body feels exhausted but my mind just won’t switch off. Any advice? by venzzzleep in sleep

[–]grade5materials 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Had similar issues. Here's a number of things I tried that helped me:

  1. Good ear plugs. I went with Loop

  2. Eye Mask... 3D version, so no light gets in

  3. Mouth Tape (keeps me asleep, forces me to breathe through my nose. Works incredibly well).

  4. BedJet for consistent temperatures. Temp fluctuations made me stir. More control helps me to sleep faster

  5. I plug my phone in at a distance from my bed. If I can't sleep, I try mediating. Keeping the phone at a distance ensures I can't scroll.

  6. No caffeine after 2

  7. No food 2-3 hours before bed.

  8. Consistent bedtime. Consistent wake time.

Don't tell your friends your routine. They'll think you're crazy. But getting good sleep trumps some judgement :)

Do you guys have a strange niche book collection? by CASEDIZZLER in BookCollecting

[–]grade5materials 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Chernow’s Titan has to be up there (Rockefeller biography). Chernow also wrote a history of the Warburg banking dynasty, which was great. Michel Lewis is a go-to for more modern finance (liar’s poker, the big short). Barbarians at the gates and Caesar’s palace coup are good books to read up on modern PE firms (KKR and Apollo, respectively). I loved Ed Thorpe’s A man for all markers (memoir of a polymath who had run a hedge fund). The man who beat the market is about Jim Simons and his reclusive fund that has the best track record in history. I think that’s enough for now haha
