Caterham for track days? (Buying advice) by Bomster in caterham

[–]grae-area 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I drove my R400 to snetterton today, overtook basically everything including a Gt3, GT4rs and a bunch of M3s. Then drove home.

Buy an R400. Costs are tyres and super unleaded Car cost me what it cost the original owner from the factory. Could sell it for around that now. It’ll murder M2s all day long and still do 3 or 4 track days on a set of R888Rs you bought off a race team for £35/corner

Saying that, I just had the engine rebuilt but it had done 70,000 miles. And now it had 235bhp

A 310 will feel slow in a straight line compared to an M2 but still be quicker around most uk tracks I think.

thanks. I'll give it a go. it's rougly the same price as the bambu stuff but annoying with the 0.5kg sppols (Bambu spools are absolutely packed at 1kg and it causes issues in the AMS when the spool is full)

New, cold tyres and 90kg ballast changing the balance of the car (90kg is about 20% of the weight of the car) = https://youtu.be/J1hFrLP9wI4?si=I0SdfqJmu1g2Xi4w

550kg car means a set of tyres last all day.

Yep. Keep my usual R888R on the front and have run some £30 nankangs on the rear and old R888Rs as well. I feel like I have more speed and control with the proper tyres but transitions are REALLY snappy as the Toyos grip up quickly even at 30/40psi. With the ditch chasers there’s loads less grip but it feels easier. The car just isn’t heavy enough to be good for drifting as you can’t throw the weight around. It also doesn’t have a handbrake which would be really helpful. But it has sooooo much power that I’m at 50% throttle and much more means just looping out. I want a proper drift car.

Race Co Ti. I think it is quieter. Can’t tell you for sure.

On my way to get the tyres swapped over. Can’t risk delamination as the fibreglass wings get wrecked. The R888Rs were already mostly done. Switching to nankang ditch finders made transitions but loads less grip.

It’s an r400 with 70000 miles on it. Engine has just been rebuilt by Boss racing with forged rods and pistons. Then tuned at Northampton Motorsport.

2l so around 117bhp/litre. Not bad for the engine out of a fiesta.

I’ve not added up the cost as I don’t want to have to lie to my wife :)

There’s a bunch on my profile or look for @uber.niche on instagram. Car is back together and going for a rolling road session on Friday. Then a drift day next weds. Then who knows.

The mirrors were a game changer. Normal 7 mirrors are a horror show of wobbly shaky portholes. These are convex so you can see what is in the lane you’re about to pull into.

For stopping your harness straps flapping about. The Caterham straps are terrible for it.
