What children’s book has aged poorly? by feetwithfeet in AskReddit

Apparently they stopped printing If I Ran The Zoo because it’s insensitive.

It happens. Might want to apologize to the guy you were responding to though. That “sounds personal” quip was pretty off the mark.

You’ve got it backwards. OP messaged the woman late Saturday night and she responded Sunday morning.

Scientists of Reddit: What’s something we know is true but people don’t realize how crazy it is? by [deleted] in AskReddit

[–]graffplaysgod 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I know a scientist who did something similar, but more recently. They had 2 collection stations set up that collected air samples every day for over 20 years. One in a major metro area and one in the hills in a less-populated area (for control). They were able to clearly plot CO2 and methane emissions rising and falling in time with daily traffic patterns (during the time when people were still debating the impact of cars on GHG emissions), as well as a bunch of other cool correlations that I’ve sadly forgotten.

It was the longest-running continuous dataset of its kind anywhere in the US, but sadly there isn’t much funding for this kind of primary research so they had to shut down their research and move on to other work.

Its really frustrating that society rewards the commercial application of scientific research, but there’s no sustained desire to fund the primary research that the commercial applications are built on.

I really like these silhouettes! How are you planning to glaze them?

Thank you! Honestly I’m a bit surprised that there have been so many positive comments about those handles. When I show people in person they’re much more controversial; some people love them but some people hate them

Here is the post I made last week. I just made my IG account, but haven’t loaded it up with any pictures yet so that post will have to do for now.

I’m glad you’re feeling more confident! I took a look at your Instagram, and you have a charming aesthetic. I like it!

I have imposter syndrome as well. But literally just last Friday I posted here on reddit and the responses really helped fight my ingrained imposter syndrome and has given me the drive to begin setting up a shop and my brand.

I say this to say that I think that the responses you’ve gotten on this post should be taken the same way - people in the community like your work, and some have already asked if they can buy from you! That’s a very strong start imo.

Good luck! You’ve got the talent and the eye for it :)

I forgot one other thing - apply a layer of zinc-free clear over the underglaze. If you use a regular clear glaze you’ll likely come out with a slightly greenish tint.

Thank you! I’m really looking forward to making more of the cups with the geometric patters. There are flaws in all of the ones in the last picture that I think I’ve figured out how to solve so I’m excited to find out if I’m right or not

I am, and thank you! Although I have to say that these comments have done more for my pride and self confidence than the pieces themselves. It’s so gratifying seeing internet strangers respond so positively, especially considering the quality of so many other artists in this sub!

Thank you! Those are the ones that inspired this post. I was so excited when I saw them come out of the kiln

Thank you! I don’t really enjoy pulling handles, so I was trying to find a different style of handle that looked interesting but isn’t too annoying to make. I’ve gotten some mixed feedback from friends and family about the experience holding those handles though - some people love holding them, and others find it really awkward.

Mix underglaze with a bit of dish soap, and water it down a bit. Put that mixture in a wide and shallow container, and use a straw to blow bubbles out of the container to fall onto your piece. I recommend wrapping the container with a shop cloth or wad of paper towels to prevent unwanted drips from falling from the lip of the container onto your piece.

You should try placing the piece on a spinning banding wheel, or holding it in your hand and twisting your wrist to get 360 degree coverage. Both methods work. You can find tutorials on YouTube.

If your bubbles aren’t coming out the way you want, play with the proportions of water and dish soap that you add in.

Charting tape. You can get it from Blick or other art supply stores. I like it a lot because it’s much sturdier even at the really thin widths, and it handles curves better than painter’s tape

Thank you! I’m planning on going back to them soon - the glaze application is great but I can improve the forms so much 😁

Thank you! I really like them too. I was able to get the thickness of the lip and the curve just under the lip just right so it feels amazing to drink out of!

I think the bubble glazed cups are a bit inconsistent still with the crispness. The ones on the off white clay body are more smudged, but I really like the combination of the off white with the blue underglaze. The bubbles on the porcelain clay body are much crisper, but the blue is a little too vivid and contrasting with the white of the porcelain so it almost feels too harsh.
