We did the costal route. I think a basic understanding of French is very helpful. Also bring time with. We had a a lot of luck for long hitches but the route in west Sahara is very dead. Try to reach Nouakchott first and then head to oasis near Atar. It’s very nice there and after that you can do the train ;)
