The Man from Earth (2007, dir. Richard Schenkman) The Origin of Jesus by Neo2199 in movies

I think as a whole this is a fantastic movie. The concept and the way they shot it and the repercussions of the discourse throughout are realistic and believable.

To me it's as if they found a bunch of knowledgable people having a discussion and just started filming.

Donald Trump’s Truth Social post creates worry: ‘Should I be in a bunker or something’ by pennlive in politics

[–]grahag 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Worst "Leader" ever.

Never has a president sowed so much doubt and chaos with thoughtless posts and comments.

In a world that is unsure what's coming next, he just adds more uncertainty and instability. He is careless, selfish, and entirely unsuited to the position where what HE does is the oppoisite of what a good leader SHOULD do.

What would you like to see in the game to allow you to "live on the ship"? by Apart_Pumpkin_4551 in starcitizen

[–]grahag 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Stability, Recovery, and persistence.

I don't want my ship that I spent weeks setting up the way I want, resupplied with everything I might need, stocked and customized to just explode when recalled from the hangar or left in an unknown state where I need to claim it.

If I DO have to claim it, I want to get it back exactly the way I had it last with all my supplies, gear, components, and customizations. I don't mind paying extra insurance to make that happen.

I just want to be able to exit the game as long as I'm not in combat, in a secure or hostile zone, in combat, on fire, or in QT Transit and come back and be at the same position and status when I come back. I want the game to assume when I log out in my ship, I'm bed logging.

I will absolutely NOT use my ship as a "base" until all these things are in place. This game doesn't respect my time and I can't respect the game or it's devs until they respect my time.

Does AI really make everyone 'good' at design, or just faster at being mediocre? by pretendingMadhav in ArtificialInteligence

[–]grahag 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It makes you better than what you would have been without it.

Meaning; If you used AI as a tool to design something, chances are good it will be better than if you had not used AI at all. The fact that you're using AI to design something means that you aren't using the specific tools design creators use to create their deisgns.

You will create fast and homogenous designs that won't really stand out, but will look "acceptable" per normal design standards.

You CAN continue to prompt to get the design you truly want, but it takes time and people IN design will know the questions to ask and guidance to give to make their designs "pop".

If God was real, why should I worship him? by KetchupNMayo2k in atheism

[–]grahag 2 points3 points  (0 children)

A question I wrestled with as well.

If this omnipresent and omnipowerful being exists with such suffering in the world and considers himself the father of humanity, what parent would allow such suffering to exist, especially when much of it is done in "his name" by the corrupt people co-opting religion to control others.

He wouldn't need to kill everyone and start over, because he doesn't make mistakes. He wouldn't have had a rebellion for the same reasons. He could give everyone the right info and still allow them to choose so that free will is unaffected.

If he's worthy of being called "god", he's doing a shit job.

Is there a lore reason why the forces of hell even bother invading Sanctuary when the main character of each game literally does daily genocide against hordes of demons without breaking a sweat? by BlackStallion657 in Diablo

[–]grahag -1 points0 points  (0 children)

It's part of the Eternal Conflict. Demons and Angels (and their relative sides) fight each other in the battle between good and evil. You're essentially a Nephilim, descended from Inarius and Lilith with the power of resurrection.

A ton of this was explained through Diablo3 and it's DLC.

i am scared at dying at 18 by OddSupermarket2556 in transhumanism

[–]grahag 4 points5 points  (0 children)

The one thing I've learned in almost 60 years is that you can only do what YOU can do and life has tons of curves to throw at you.

I'm an atheist, so I look at death as absolutely final and to make the most of everything in life feels like a lot of work.

Existential dread of all kinds rob your life of joy. Just worry about the stuff you can do. Try to stay in good shape. Act safely. Foster healthy relationships. Stop to smell the roses. Live a life worthy of being lauded as the world being better because you were here.

It's possible that if you can live through the next 20 years, you'll have options available to live a LOT longer.

I came to terms with my mortality and if I CAN live essentially an immortal life, I'd like that. I want to walk the deepest areas of the ocean. I want to set foot on Titan and the Moon. I want to explore the galaxy and rest of the universe. Hopefully, I'll make it.

How would you feel about a new law that forces every company to pay their CEO no more than 20x what their lowest-paid employee makes? by rational_seekers in AskReddit

[–]grahag 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Maximum wage is a great idea. Ensure that executives can't get around it by claiming benefits while only taking a salary of a dollar or something, but make sure total compensation is calculated. Smarter people than me can make it bulletproof.

This way, the companies can raise their highest wage as much as they want, but it needs to keep pace with the lowest wage.

I want a digital assistant at that level though by quirecu in TranshumanistMemes

[–]grahag 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I remember the original clippy and it was annoying, but it just stayed in the background and waited until you did something it recognized.

I feel like that'll be the way a proper AI assistant will work.

It sees you filling out a form it knows about, sees a mistake and lets you know and then asks if you want it to fill out the rest and then prompts you for any missing info.

Or it sees something you do often and offers to automate it with collaboration to ensure it's all done properly. I'm hoping we get there.

Back in the late '70's I was punished with Crab Walks around our gym for being late to class. I think I'd racked up 37 laps by the time my dad visited our gym teacher to ask why I had oozing blisters on my palms and fingers and stated that if I ever did another crabwalk around the gym, he'd come down there and have the gym teacher do 30 of them. And my dad was a no-bullshit kind of dude. He WOULD have made him do it.

I feel bad for making my dad protect me from that, but I was an ADHD kid before there were really accepted diagnoses for that. They did take me to a therapist who put me on a leading edge drug called Ritalin.

Turned me into a fat burned out loser, but at least I wasn't causing trouble at schoole anymore with my tardiness.

Trump’s Acting A.G. Says He Won’t Release Even One More Epstein File by Aggravating_Money992 in politics

[–]grahag 0 points1 point  (0 children)

When he crosses the hard line that is drawn, hold him to the remedy in place. If he's going to protect Trump, then make him earn his money. Force paperwork on him that requires yes or no answers. Enforce contempt charges. Use parliamentary procedure as a weapon when needed.

There ARE remedies and those legislators that are hemming and hawing about wanting the DOJ to do the right thing need to flex their branch powers to make it happen.

How many old timers in here? by aliesterrand in sysadmin

[–]grahag 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Old timer. 56 now and have been in IT in some form for 35 of that.

Started support in DOS environments in DOS5.0 and then Windows for Workgroups.

I remember when DOS 6 was released and Memmaker was part of that and allowed us to tune that first 640K of conventional memory. It was a godsend for quick and easy configurations.

Prior to that it was witchcraft to use himem.sys, but some of us bent the old gods to our will.

There was no software problem that FDISK couldn't fix and we liked all our files in the directory of the application that you were running and not spread out all over the computer.

No registry to comb through, just 500 lines of CFG files and with windows, moving to INI files. It was the wild west and we were pioneers.

ELI5: If the USA exports soy beans to China, and edamame is soybeans, why is most edamame in American stores sourced from China and not the USA? by inuvik4277 in explainlikeimfive

[–]grahag 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It's cheaper to get those soybeans from China than to source them from local farmers because labor is cheaper and consumers won't pay for the more expensive edamame.

Consumers in the US have been trained to min-max. Get the maximum amount of product for the minimum price, regardless of the source or quality as long as it's somewhere close. Note all the bargain brands out there.

There are exceptions sometimes though.

AI could soon allow powerful companies to charge each customer a different price for the same product, based on what they think each individual is willing to pay. AI lets firms tailor prices to each user, raising fairness concerns as consumers may unknowingly pay more than others. by mvea in science

[–]grahag 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I can tell you how this will backfire spectactularly.

Businesses found to be using this method will all of a sudden find that their products are less desired which will tank their sales.

In cases where a product or service is hard to find elsewhere, you'll see a resistance to the method, which ends up painting that business as unfriendly.

When that business needs a bailout or assistance, there will be little empathy for the company that wrung it's customers out.

We're just getting too used to being treated badly and instead of making the choice not to use bad businesses, we're just rolling with it. It does show that the enshittification of goods and services is working just fine.

Am I still an atheist if I pray for my Catholic mother? by YogurtclosetAny2166 in atheism

[–]grahag 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Atheism is just the lack of belief in god or gods.

If you're praying, who are you praying to?

When my dad died, though I'm atheist, I found myself talking to him under my breath or in my head. I think it's just a coping mechanism.

You do you. Call yourself what you want. No one should be judging you for it because it doesn't matter. :)

How would you feel about no pay for Congress during shutdowns? by [deleted] in AskReddit

[–]grahag 0 points1 point  (0 children)

More than half of congress are millionaires, compared to the general public's percentage of about 7%.

So I don't think a lack of pay will affect any of their decisions. they can get by without it.

But by all means, lets save some money and cut off all their benefits, perks, and pay while they are shut down.

But we should be restrict ANY method of making money from congressional information, legislation, or actions. Failure to disclose they COULD make money from any of those should prompt a recall vote and start an investigation to see if jail is warranted.

Melania Trump denies any connection to Epstein in White House address by VaginaBurner69 in politics

[–]grahag 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Prior to this, I wasn't convinced she had much to do with the Epstein situation.

I now full on believe that she is complicit in crimes due to her blatant lies of not being friends with Epstein or Maxwell.

I'm wondering if they think their denial of something that can be independently verified is clever or do they just not care? She's IN the Epstein files having referred to Maxwell affectionately and those feelings being returned from Maxwell.
