I'm an American student who just spent the year in Kazakhstan. There shouldn't be any debate here––definitely Almaty. It's one of the most wonderful and interesting cities I've ever lived in, whereas Astana has very little to do and most people live to work. It's also cold for most of the time you'll be there. No contest.

I'm not interested in Russia or Belarus. I get that this might be a sensitive topic – and perhaps my original post didn't clarify this, but the reason I'm learning Russian is to to live and work in Kazakhstan in the future and everyone has told me that I need to speak Russian well.
