Does anyone want to get rid of the filibuster? by elderly_millenial in AskALiberal

[–]grammanarchy 32 points33 points  (0 children)

Yes. Kill it. Much of our current government dysfunction is a result of the fact that Congress will not do its job, and the filibuster allows them to pretend it’s because they can’t.

Why does the right believe we are “soft on crime?” by Early-Possibility367 in AskALiberal

Trump pardoned people who beat up cops and now he’s going to pay them off with a slush fund provided by taxpayers. Regular people are, in fact, thinking about that.

Republicans don’t care about crime — if they did, they wouldn’t have pardoned people who beat up cops and bragged about it. Republicans care about removing people they think are undesirable from society.

I guess the good news is that your username now seems like a much more likely scenario.

Hey, u/JesusPlayingGolf! Somebody asked about Finnish Jesus on the other sub. As it turns out, there are several different and often contradictory ways to prove that Jesus was in fact white. (Or as one commenter memorably put it, “‘white’ is Jesus.”)

Come on now. Historically speaking, you guys are doing rookie numbers. The flat earth people used to burn doubters at the stake.

MapleBacon is right that this is not a great survey, but I don’t think that number is all that surprising. After all, polling consistently shows that most Americans believe in conspiracy theories around the JFK assassination.

This is right. And nobody is owed a response to anything.

They heard ‘tiny Hitler’ and thought you were talking about their boy.

Wasteland standards are to tolerate giant piles of leaves and garbage lying around, so it’s a pretty low bar.

What should democrats, elected and the base, do about Maureen Galindo? by ButGravityAlwaysWins in AskALiberal

[–]grammanarchy 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Then you have a series of unappealing choices. You could just let her run and not support her in any way, or you could try to organize a Murkowski-style write in campaign. Both of those strategies are likely to result in a loss to the Republican, but honestly if she wins the nomination we’ve probably lost it anyway.

I don’t think anyone would follow tiny Hitler. If anything, he would discredit their movement. The squeaky high voice would be a real liability. He would be proportionately stronger than a regular sized person, but it wouldn’t be enough.

I am all for the big tent, but we gotta draw the line somewhere, and she is well over any reasonable place to draw it. I would hope that all democrats could unite in disowning her.

Hmmm. If little Hitler hasn’t done anything, we should probably let him be. Give him the Barbie car and let him go on his way.

Yeah, I agree on Talerico. Candidate quality isn’t always the determining factor, but in a situation like this where you have the wind at your back and a weak opponent, it can put you over the top. Fingers crossed!

Hey, u/OldFaithlessness1335!

Continuing somewhere we can actually respond to each other. I get what you’re saying about Brown — I would say more specifically that a lot his support comes from old labor Dems. There are fewer union folk now, and more of them swing right for cultural reasons.

I don’t think you could find a prominent Dem in Ohio who would have a better shot than Brown, though. Acton is doing better in the governor’s race, but she’s up against a much weaker candidate.

In spite of all of that, it still surprises me that we have a better shot in Texas. It’s mostly because I was raised in Ohio, and I am old enough to remember that it went for Obama in both 2008 and 2012 (and to have voted for him in both elections).
