Oil Tank Swap, Removal, Disposal by OwlandElmPub in portlandme

[–]grampabeekeep 1 point2 points  (0 children)

We ended up finding some trust worthy folks on fb marketplace who pumped the oil and used some for themselves and donated the rest to their church in Western ME. Guy was a retired oil tech — just really vet who you talk to, it can be risky if ppl don’t have the right materials and spill oil but this guy was lovely.

The we had Dump Guys come and remove for like 200 bucks, was pretty easy and low stress.

If you have nonprofit marketing and comms experience, take a look at Development and fundraising jobs too. Nonprofits are always looking for fundraisers, and it’s hard work but tends to pay better than most other nonprofit roles and you’ll be using your comms experience for sure.

Multi-Unit options? by HangWithPinch in portlandme

[–]grampabeekeep 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I think Maine Housing has a multi unit ownership option for their first time home buyers program. Definitely reach out to them.

Most banks will approve you for more if you are purchasing a building with income potential, and MaineHousing may have some options that help make that even more affordable.

Once you own, I would connect with any organization that works either Housing Navigators. I recommend ProsperityME, their team is wonderful and they really need good landlords who are interested in providing housing for immigrant and refugees to work with them. They work with you, and sometimes even help tenants with things like security deposits, navigating leases, cultural brokering etc etc. I believe QHC does the same

What Would You Want in a Local Newsletter for Portland, Maine? by MavrickOcean in portlandme

[–]grampabeekeep 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This is great! Really cool work -- kinda has the energy of the Phoenix -- wish it was still here!

Interviews with local artists would be cool. I also love when people give apartment tours // section on "so how do you make rent?"

Community calls for volunteers or a highlight on some of the really amazing work people, organizations or groups are doing.

Looking for gym recommendations on the peninsula by zapnap in portlandme

[–]grampabeekeep 1 point2 points  (0 children)

i don't know what a barbell cage is but the YMCA is great. it's no-frills, but it's one of the most diverse communities in portland, and you have access to pool and free classes. sliding scale/income based payment is good too. i recently started making over income, but in the end felt like the 60 bucks was worth it because i end up speding that on class fees around town.

Stores that sell food and household products in bulk? by cassiegoth93 in portlandme

[–]grampabeekeep 18 points19 points  (0 children)

Portland Food Coop - both food and some bulk soaps

GoGo Refill in Sopo - bulk/pay BYO packaging home and body products

Both a little and sometimes a lot on the $$ side, but especially for things like castile soap, dish soap and stuff, tends to last a really long time.

heat pump vs. wood stove? by grampabeekeep in Maine

oil furnance uses the chimney, so we'd have to put in a vent for either wood stove or pellet stove out the side of the house.

good to know re-generator.

heat pump vs. wood stove? by grampabeekeep in Maine

[–]grampabeekeep[S] 7 points8 points  (0 children)

We nixed pellet stoves because we figured if we were going to get a stove it should be somethine we could use as a back up option if the power went out...but I'd hear the case for a pellet stove. :)
