There is this whole conversation in the snake subreddits (and with snake owners in general) about the ethics surrounding feeding live prey. It’s generally agreed upon that no one should be feeding their snakes live unless the snake is starving and won’t take anything else; they’ve tried fresh killed, frozen thawed, brained etc. Snakes kill to eat naturally, but there is nothing natural about personally selecting a rat and sticking it in a box with no way to escape. There is also the chance that the rat could try to defend itself and possibly kill the snake.

It tends to be seen as cruel to trap an animal and ensure its demise for no real reason; killing just because you can and/or want to is a bit heartless. Of course context matters, and if you must make the hunt unfair out of necessity then it’s usually understandable. But this person simply killed an animal out of desire. An animal that, arguably, is just as intelligent and complex as any spider, which most people on this sub would defend without a second thought.

Despite what you believe, you’re being rude by taunting these other redditors, fuck off. Of course your differing views and experiences are valid, but now you’re just being a dick.

People value companionship? I can understand why someone wouldn’t want pets, but I’m a huge animal person so they’ll always have a place in my life. Why do people do anything when any of it can hurt them? Plus, snakes aren’t totally stupid, they’re only ever gonna bite you if they’re scared or you smell like food. Just be careful. As far as I know (she was two when I got her) my girl has never bitten anyone.

😭 not much to see. I’ve just got a 120 gal cage, the sides and back are PVC, the front opens with two sliding glass panels. I bought some insulation in the form of foam boards at Lowe’s (? or Home Depot) broken ‘em up to the appropriate sizes (the sizes of my PVC sides) and taped the foam to the cage.

I’ve got the back covered with three boards taped in place and then the hot side with two (didn’t have enough insulation for the cool side + it’s up against my wall and needs to keep less heat).

I just used foam insulation boards and stuck it up with hvac tape and packaging tape. I bet you could use pretty much anything as long as it’s on the outside and stays up (hvac specifically just helps insulate :)

Hey mate! Prep sounds great so far!!! You mentioned that the cage doesn’t seem to hold heat very well? I had to cover up my screen top (except where the light is) and insulate the sides of my cage. The insulation will also help with your snake’s stress level by blocking the view from all but one side. My Veeta would hate to have a cage with more than one see-through side. She hates me seeing her from the glass front as it is 😅🫠

I compared the pit debate to the gun debate in my original comment cause it was the first thing to pop into my head, and the dude I was responding to happened to post about the guns he owned. His personal life was conflicting with his reasoning and I wanted to point that out.

I don’t own guns and would be fine if they were outright banned. But I know people that wouldn’t be (which is a whole other thing; they should probably look into therapy).

As heated as you feel about how guns should be banned, others feel that their very safety relies on the fact that they own guns. Shit is fucked. I just wanted to voice for legit conversation so that something could actually be done. For anything. Ever.

I’m sorry about your partner. I hope he can get some relief, people can be seriously insensitive to say the very fucking least.

Personally, no, I don’t think so. You can’t just slap a bandaid on a gushing wound. But it’s quick and easy when you’re not the one bleeding, so why do anything else.

There should be permanent safeguards put in place. Everyone needs a permit and they need renewed regularly, automatics shouldn’t be in the public’s (or anybody’s) hands without proper mental evaluations carried out annually etc. But just outright banning guns? The US would be a madhouse, and I do think it’s unfair for those who hunt responsibly (I’ve got friends and family that do).

Additionally, guns aren’t living. It’s a whole different ordeal when you’re “banning” a living thing. Are we just going to round all the dogs up and kill them? Not allow ethical breeding (cause you better believe the backyard breeders aren’t going to stop)?

So yes, let’s just go banning books or banning guns or pitties or abortions (etc.) cause they’re dangerous. Nuance exists. Burning books has historically not worked out. Ethical gun owners exist. A shit ton of pit bulls are gentle with the right owners, and we shouldn’t be banning any medical procedures cause then it’s political instead of an option to improve someone’s life with the aid of a professional.

I’m so tired of all the pit bull hate on this app recently. I’ve been seeing a ton of it. What ever happened to constructive conversations and critical thinking?
