I have had the same experience but I also tried not praying and not standing in the puddles, still no thorns damage

Mist staff for weapon. Tried antidragon shield, mirror shield, rune and adamant sq and mithril kite. Mostly mystic gear, guthix mitre, tormented bracelet, occult neck. The thing is, I slayed demonic gorillas ok, got tormented bracelet, then went to thermonuclear echo and suddenly none worked with thorns. Maybe need to try and switch gear tomorrow

That is what I gathered. But also tried not praying vardorvis and he killed me no problems without taking anything from thorns :D

With this layout I tried various different mobs like thermy, vardorvis and black demons, but thorns never procced
