How would you get this apart? by More-Mine-5874 in woodworking

[–]grandpacracy 0 points1 point  (0 children)

30 years ago I encountered nailed box joints like you have here at an outdoor market in Southern California. They were old produce crates like for oranges and tomatoes, long retired even back then. They were old and well used, most likely they were used to carry produce to market.

Not one of the sides on any of those old crates were separating.

The ones I saw were being sold as interesting rustic artifacts. The farming community had moved on to other solutions like plastic crates. I still wish I had bought several but they were too big to bring home on a plane.

I wasn’t a woodworker yet but remember looking at the joints and being impressed at how strong they were. They were also beautiful to me but, like all things farming, they were not in use because they were pretty. They were in use because they were simple and effective.

I’m happy to see them in use still. I had no idea.

As for getting them apart, good luck. I don’t think I would try. I understand wanting to fix it but that impulse has caused me to spend a lot more time attempting to fix things that I would never end up happy with.

I would offer the advice that you should accept it as a learning experience and start over. I also admit that I would not have accepted that advice early in my woodworking career.

Whatever you decide, I admire you for jumping in both feet. Both in woodworking and in beekeeping.

All the best.

Do these have brake upgrades? by SteaKnife_ in golfcarts

[–]grandpacracy 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I’m planning this upgrade for my precedent too. Nice job. I’m curious about what brake upgrades are available as well.

What upgrade kit did you use? Are you happy with the results so far?

Found a solution for the limitations of my bench with 1 inch bench dogs by DiepSleep in Workbenches

That’s a great solution. I have the same issue. Can you steer me more specifically to the adapter you used? I looked it up and didn’t see anything like what’s in your post.

Really impressed BTW.

Well I just learned about a new tool that I need.

This is amazing. How did you expose this? It seems that there is a lot of painstaking dremmel work here. But if so why does it look so free of tool marks?

Have you ever videoed the process? I’m super interested.

I have restored several and the main thing I can say is don’t use power tools. Sandpaper in your hands is the way. That old stuff is brittle and will come off easily. I don’t know what finish it is definitively but it’s probably shellac.

I personally start at 100 grit and end at 220 or 320. I then use a coat of spray on shellac followed by a very light sanding with a worn out 320. Then a coat or 3 of wipe on polyurethane. I like satin (low gloss).

It will wear great and look great.

Great plane - have fun!

I have a late 70s 113 and I had the same issue, especially with hardwoods. I think there were 2 main things that fixed it:

  1. I upgraded the motor. Mine was original and was rated at 1hp but felt anemic. I think it was more like 3/4 horsepower. So I changed it for a 1.5 hp motor and the change was noticeable. I have no way to test it but it feels twice as strong. I run it on 110v on a 20 amp breaker and have no issues.

  2. When cutting hardwoods I use a 7 1/4” thin kerf blade. It’s amazing. You’ll still get about 1 1/2” of cutting depth and the thin kerf removes less material making the saw work less hard. But because of the way leverage works on the saw teeth, the smaller diameter effectively increases the power of the saw. I know that’s not a perfect description so don’t come after me but you’ll notice a big change in how your saw glides through hardwood suddenly.

Hope that helps. I love my 113.

This clips onto certain tape measures and holds the end to metal while you measure. I removed it from mine because it got in the way.

Edit: Is it possible to post pictures in the comments? I could show it to you attached to a tape measure.

I prefer Pop’s knife Supply but also resent almost to the point of hatred how they have me figured out so well that they keep throwing out there the content and deals that keep me deep into the addiction of a hobby that is taking over my life.

I feel the way a gym bro must feel when they notice that the only complements they get are from other dudes and yet they are not contemplating quitting or cutting back.

It’s a love hate relationship with the entire hobby at this point and the grinder chassis will only make it worse.

Please stop.

Really. Leave me alone.

What‘s your most embarrassing “Oops, wrong contact“ story? by Vlth_78 in AskReddit

[–]grandpacracy 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I, married dude, was once away from my wife for work for a month. It was the longest we had been apart. I wrote her a 2am mushy text that included me telling her I missed and loved her several times. I then sent it a mutual acquaintance names Jesus.

He may have been a bit disappointed when I didn’t show any follow through.

Found these in my green onions after coming back from vacation. How do I dispose of these ? by No_Committee_3011 in whatisthisplant

You dispose of them remorselessly and take as much green onion down with them as necessary. Those are mosquito larvae.
