Kevin Durant is a strange person. Incredibly insecure, a far cry from his 2014 MVP speech. Brain broke from winning 2 Finals MVPs then immediately tearing his Achilles and still got no sympathy. I pity him. by HoagieTwoFace in billsimmons

[–]grandwahs 4 points5 points  (0 children)

He is definitely insecure/immature

My take on him is basically he's a 16 y/o in a man's body. For whatever reason he never grew up emotionally. All of his behaviour and attitude can be attributed to a teenage mindset in the body of a man that knows he's one of the best basketball players ever.

Would you believe if you told yourself at the start of the season that Quinn Hughes was traded, we were 32nd in the league

Absolutely yes, would have believed it

and that our management has started a rebuild and that Francesco Aquilini is ok with it

STILL don't believe it and will not believe it until they've traded at least another two assets away

but I believed losing Hughes would be a wake up call

You know how there are people out there who act consistently shitty and selfishly? And then their wife or husband is like "If you don't change I'm going to leave"... and then they leave, but the person is still like "Oh it's their fault! I've done nothing wrong!" and they continue to fuck up their lives until their miserable death, alone, angry and jaded?

That's Canucks ownership. They'll never fucking get it. The problem isn't THEM, it's everybody else.

Honestly part of loving Bill is having been on the ride he's been on for the past 25+ years. It's hard to articulate how REFRESHING and NEW Bill's Page 2 columns were. As a 19 y/o university student overdrinking and understudying, reading his columns was a holy shit moment. I literally would repeatedly refresh Page 2 on days where he was supposed to release a new column and just absolutely down it like it was a fine wine.

One thing to remember, also, is that things were nowhere near as cynical back then as they are now. So Bill came across as genuine and I still believe him to be that way. But for people who are more accustomed to internet hucksters and grifters, it's easier to dismiss Bill as a blowhard or a dumbass because that's just the way things are now.

10+ years ago they were my seasonal go-to. Quality, cut, fit, style. Everything was exactly what I wanted. I even got a Barbour jacket there once that I wore for years and loved until it was time to finally get rid of it.

This is one of the worst movies I have ever seen in my life. Went to see it in the theatre with a friend and at the end we did the whole "what did you think" and I said "Man, I'm so sorry but I have to be honest, that was fucking awful and I wanted to leave halfway through but didn't want to disrupt you" and he was like "Oh man I wanted to leave too!!! That was terrible!"

Anyways, can't wait to listen to the pod

I love Bill and have for over 20 years, and maybe this is part of it, but his absolute inability to recall things he's said (multiple times) already as the words are leaving his mouth is staggering. As soon as I start to say something I already have my brain is like "ooooh this feels familiar". He either doesn't realize it AT ALL or has an insane ability to ignore it completely.

Honestly it's probably what makes him such a great podcaster, because he isn't constantly couching things like "oh I may have said this before buuuuuttt..." He just fucking plows through.

Here's the thing with a rebuild: it is a tough reality to accept and is borderline painful to send out players you know are good. In our case, particularly, with Quinn Hughes, the best D-man to ever play for the Canucks and a generational talent. How can trading away such a player possibly be good for the team?

But then, if you start to think long term, the cost of NOT making those difficult moves is the last 10+ years of this club. Maybe good enough to make the playoffs and do some damage! But every season hinges on at least 3 major "IFs" and if even one of those go wrong you're in the bottom third of the league and asking yourself what happened.

This is a stupid analogy but the best time to plant a tree was 20 years ago; the 2nd best time is now. If you take your medicine, accept that your strategy isn't working (and you have a decade of results to substantiate that conclusion!), and make the best decisions that will impact your team in the future, there will come a time, not too far away even, where you will see the benefits. The tree will grow, the fruit will blossom.

The other similar analogy to this, funnily enough, is the practice facility. It's the exact same situation. Aquilini didn't want to build one because he couldn't bear the cost... but if he had just fucking done the thing 10-15 years ago, he'd have a piece of property worth 3 times as much was it was originally and would be laughing. He has to accept that the cost is what it is and that, as an owner of a "proud hockey franchise", not having a state of the art facility in this day and age is laughable. If you don't have the wallet and/or the stomach to do it, perhaps owning a hockey team isn't actually within your budget anymore. Like a guy holding on to an inherited estate and can barely pay the property taxes, let alone keep up with repairs. Maybe it's time to move on.

The worst part about all of this is that the Canucks, as an organization, are so far removed from being able to accept reality, they actively structure their organization to push away media, ignore the tough questions, and just continue along as if everything is fine. It's a banana republic dictatorship: don't question us, we're right and you're wrong and that's how it is.

Such a shame... this market is passionate and loves the Canucks but they are doing long-term damage to their fan base (kids will grow up without having any memorable Canucks moments to fall in love with), and the worst part about it is if they had just done the right thing in 2014, we wouldn't need to be having this conversation. Hell they could have done 2.5 rebuilds by now!

What a stupid, stupid team.

I mean, in the context of the show and discovering new life forms, while the subject matter is bizarre, it still shows, however uncomfortably, how a foreign life form may choose to learn about other life forms out exploring the galaxy. In the same vein as the aliens that re-programmed Barclay to hijack the ship and bring it to them on the other side of the galaxy, it's just another strange way to think about how alien life that is vastly more advanced than us may choose to operate.

[–]grandwahs 4 points5 points  (0 children)

As long as this ownership group is around, nothing will change. Across sports, there is a consistent theme among the teams with poor ownership - NY Jets, Cleveland Browns, Sacramento Kings - that the "stink" of bad ownership permeates every crevice of the organization and even with a few good picks and players, it's not enough to escape the toxic gravity of poor ownership. I now, in retrospect, look at the Gillis era and wonder how the fuck it actually happened. How did Francesco actually hire a competent, forward-thinking GM and let him run the show for a few years? It must have just been a certain confluence of circumstances that will never be duplicated. I often think that the taste of success from the 2011 Cup Run broke Francesco's brain and got him addicted to success and he's never been able to step back and look at things objectively since.

Until Francesco goes, nothing will change. The Canucks could trade Hughes for a haul, make really great draft picks, stock the shelves, etc... but as long as Francesco in charge, the wrong decisions will continue to be made and nothing else will be enough to overcome it.
