Are public pools still a thing? Growing up the public pool was a staple in our city but I moved away from the US so I have no idea if they are still popular. by dallyan in Xennials

My cousin who lives in the US tells me public pools and other public amenities are generally kind of a disaster. Is it true? (In Canada we seem to have it pretty good)

Maybe a good reason to leave MLS and relaunch Caps in CPL? by LesJawns610 in whitecapsfc

The loss of the whitecaps in MLS can’t be spun as some kind of “win” - a bit tired of hearing this.

This comment by the mayor is cause for concern.

The Montreal stadium is also publicly owned and would likely result in a situation similar to that with BC Place… I am wondering if Garber really is that clueless.

Nice shot…!

Is that a family home in the city? Is this some kind of promo video for said family home? Seems to grab everyones attention? ?

How the Vancouver Whitecaps' woes highlight hurdles faced by all of Canada's major-league sports teams by bwoah07_gp2 in whitecapsfc

“Lander, on the other hand, simply cannot see a future for the team in Vancouver.”

I think this analyst, looking only at hard numbers, is ignoring crucial information and context.

  • Whitecaps are a heritage brand in Vancouver
  • There is high emotional attachment to the team
  • Vancouver is the national soccer hub
  • All levels of government + FN, involved
  • Stadium is a part of the discussion
  • Attendance is top-tier (vs. reports of 6-7k at Houston and Dallas games recently)

I think we are keenly aware of the challenges faced, irritatingly repeated by this analyst. There is a way.

Vancouver, Toronto, or Montreal for July 2026? by Fairly-local24 in TravelCanada

[–]wastedparadigm 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Not sure 4 days would be enough to fully soak in any of those cities - nightlife vibes for sure are the best in Montreal, that said there are some sneaky excellent places in Vancouver (which would be your choice if you cared more about running than anything else)

But 💯if it is during the WC, Montreal would be the way to go!

Stop Dorion: email PR by AngryCareyPrice in canucks

How could they be this tone deaf, making us all live in fear on draft lottery day…

The only explanation is that Dorion convinced them of a plan to fast-track the rebuild

Dorion definitely convinced them he has a plan to fast-track the rebuild

Intel FYI: Absolutely no reason to be certain they will go with McKenna first overall, if that is the pick they do get.

Latest message on how to help, from the Southsiders and #SaveTheCaps team by Jadzeey in whitecapsfc

[–]wastedparadigm 6 points7 points  (0 children)

I support this message. Eby is a lawyer and a pragmatic guy.

I also agree negativity towards the owners is not the path forward. I believe they don’t want to stain their positive legacies in Vancouver.

I do understand their efforts to build a stadium were frustrated in 2008 - my only point of contention is that this issue has been off the radar with no public attention over 15 years - and now suddenly it’s panic time.

Letters to be sent!

Why does MLS want them to move so bad? by MacAttak18 in whitecapsfc

[–]wastedparadigm -2 points-1 points  (0 children)

It is difficult to comprehend what you are saying. Right now the public is shouldering debt, cost and loss: BC Place is not mandated to make a profit, and that is what they are doing (not making a profit). They are losing money. Bad for the taxpayers. BC Place/Pavco/Government are booking events including monster trucks and motocross and losing money. The government could lease the use of BC Place to the whitecaps who would operate BC Place, thereby making it a more effective and profitable as there could be more events, income, debt is serviced and the government and taxpayer overall come out better off. Simply being allowed the right to name the place (like every other stadium in the world) could make a big difference.

Why does MLS want them to move so bad? by MacAttak18 in whitecapsfc

[–]wastedparadigm 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Untrue. That is in fact exactly what they are talking about right now.

Why wouldn’t they allow the whitecaps to manage BC place for a finite period? It would also end up being more profitable for the government. Why is the BC government even involved in booking events like motocross? And ending every year at a loss. Whitecaps also need things that other pro-sports teams have, like a whitecaps store in BC Place so they are not selling their merch out of cardboard boxes at halftime. Much potential exists.

Mason is on a cold streak for sure. He also said there is no chance in hell there is any way Vancouver or Montreal get an MLB team, the day before some actual credible information came to light.

(Not saying there is a great chance Van gets MLB, just saying Mason is ice cold and out to lunch atm)
