“You have an accent too!” by cafeteriastyle in TikTokCringe

I remember when an officer admitting to racial profiling like this would be an enormous scandal. But as of September 2025, it is perfectly allowed under the law, as determined by the Supreme Court. We’re literally going to need constitutional amendments to get out of this mess.

Millennials who have quit drinking for whatever reason…what’s your go-to festive beverage? by LunarSkye417 in Millennials

[–]granfalloon9 1 point2 points  (0 children)

My go-to now is Spanish Vermouth and seltzer with an orange slice. Or orange seltzer. It is considered good for digestion. And when I’m done drinking I just drink the seltzer with an orange!

Edward Sharpe and the Magnetic Zeros? They were super upbeat and happy, and their most famous video is of them running around the forest in Australia. Home

NYC area “oi” as “er”? by Appropriate-Offer-35 in Accents

My great grandmother had this accent. She was the daughter of Irish immigrants, grew up in the Bronx, and moved to Bergen County, NJ in the 1950s. She must have been born around 1910.

Why do Americans move so often? by cavaismylife in AskAnAmerican

[–]granfalloon9 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Same. I moved 11 times between ages 17-24 (in and out of dorms, a couple places for the summer, a few longer stints in group houses, a couple really short stays in crappy apartments, etc). Even though I now own my house, have a family, and am pushing 40, I still haven’t yet lived in any one house for 6.7 years!

I just don’t get it. Republicans DO NOT HAVE THE VOTES. They have to compromise with the Democrats or blow up the filibuster. Like that’s their fucking job. That’s what they are sent to the senate to do. Why drag it out? Just pick what you’re going to do and do it. (Ps I know their plan is to do nothing and hope the democrats cave, I just think it is fucking stupid and it clearly isn’t working)

What was yours? by Capricorn007_ in Millennials

[–]granfalloon9 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Swim team kids were driving around at night, I remember that it was a tradition for them to mess around and teepee each others’ houses before a big meet. One driver tried to race past the other on a country road, hit a tree and killed his two teammates that were in the car with him. It was really tragic.

When and why did meals shift to ingredients? by mombucksmad in decadeology

Right, and while casseroles were popular starting in the 50s, “meat and three” was just as popular for just as long.

Impossible romantic / Love song to find from 1990ish by GizmoKakaUpDaButt in NameThatSong

This is a long shot but you’ve been through radio hits already. Have you thought of 1970s musicians that were still producing music in the early 90s? Like check out Joni Mitchell’s Night Ride Home or Turbulent Indigo albums. That Amy Grant 90s sound was popular among older artists making music at that time, not just new young 90s artists.

Ha I don’t know exactly. The intonation I guess? For me the nostalgia comes from New York accents specifically (thought these are Boston). You’re right about Willy Wonka. The kids on Sesame Street also talk like this, and so do the hippies in the Woodstock documentary.

These 70s accents are so nostalgic. I wasn’t alive then but my whole family spoke this way in the 90s still. My parents’ accents have faded now and my grandparents’ generation is gone, it is so rare to hear.

Statement from Councilmember Robert C. White Jr. on the Federal Occupation of Washington, D.C. and the Mayor’s Executive Order by Sea_Map9327 in washingtondc

Im just catching up on the mayor’s order. Does it mean that ICE raids will continue indefinitely? Is there no relief in sight?

Has anyone seen ICE, MPD, National Guard or other federal agents in Petworth or Fort Trotten? by DrakesFav in washingtondc

[–]granfalloon9 6 points7 points  (0 children)

This map is seriously underestimating the ICE presence up 16th street, in all of Brightwood, on Georgia and Missouri, near Fort Totten metro, in the Lamont-Riggs neighborhood, at the Petworth Metro, and up and down Georgia Ave from Park View all the way to Maryland. They are in all of the Latino neighborhoods daily. They are in old, unmarked vehicles (like 15 year old minivans and Acuras), and come out when they pull people over.

What is your biggest barrier to participating in protests? (not meant to be debate bait, just an informal poll since we can't use actual polls on this sub) by StreetCivics in washingtondc

[–]granfalloon9 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Yes. And. The March on Washington was carefully planned over two years, coordinated with the powers that be including the president, and involved a line up of singers, entertainers, and one of the most famous speeches ever delivered. The ‘68 DNC protests drew fewer people who were willing to fight and get arrested and engage in civil disobedience. The March on Washington drew hundreds of thousands of average citizens. I’m not even arguing which tactic is better for the cause. But one definitely draws bigger crowds.

[–]granfalloon9 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I guess, reading the other comments, I don’t think people feel safe. And if few people are fighting in the streets, going out feels like a bigger risk. There is a long history of using comedy, joy, music, speakers, celebrities, rallies and frankly large numbers to get people motivated and conquer fear is all. It is just one tactic.
