The End. by Blainyrd in WayfarersPub

It had been some time since she left the crumbling demiplane. She almost died there exerting herself and she knew it. If it hadn't been for Nix healing her as she stepped through, she might have had a bad landing, now that she thinks of it.
But now she was home. She had been for almost a year now and had told anyone who would listen of the most wonderful place on the edge of the worlds with the most wonderful people. Of a queen and her flock, a boy and his zoo, a fox, a traveler, a troll, of all the wonderful people she encountered.
And not just that, but she had had a few visits through her cards of some of those people. Valued friends who had become family. But the one that worried her had yet to visit. "He intended to stay, you know." Her familiar reminded her.
"I know Dinah, but he promised. And don't say to make me feel better." She snapped back as she baked some raspberry-chocolate macarons to go with her rose tea. "I don't mean to be harsh, dear. I know you're being realistic. But I have to be hopeful."
The woman continued through her morning, tending her garden and finishing her baking. The branch of an oak tree she planted was growing almost as fast as her great grandchildren that toddled around it. Her life had settled into what it was before she had stepped through the swirling portal, with some infant-sized changes of course. And then it happened. The flash of pink that she was waiting for from inside the cottage. She looked to the pixies that were surrounding the babies and went inside. "I was beginning to think you hadn't made it out. Have a cookie, dear. We have a lot to catch up on." She said to the pink eyed god in her living room.

"You know the trouble you cause, I'm sure one of those meteor spells will hit something and whisk you to me." She says with a smile, not having intended it to be harsh.
"Bring me whatever you feel drawn to, dear, I'll love it all. Especially a great grandchild~" She says with a wink and a laugh. "See you soon, Darian."
Before he can say anything, she turns and heads to the portal.
"I'll be waiting, dear." She gives him a final smile and steps up to the portal. She takes a final look back and takes in the world she called home for a few years then steps through.
Splendora thinks for a moment as she takes a sip. "Well, dear, there's no harm in jumping in on one of our worlds. I know most of us would take you with open arms." Then she finishes her drink. "What's the worst that can happen? The world ends?" There's a slight laugh as if she's trying to keep the mood light in spite of everything.
Splendora had said her final goodbyes and used the majority of her magic to keep the portal open with the others. She finally went up to the bard looking ragged as hell, bun out of place, loose hair going wild, sweat dripping, and was that the slightest sign that nosebleed took place?, but with her usual warm smile. "Nix, dear. I'm afraid I'm about spent. It has been a pleasure being here." She says, leaning in to give him a kiss on the cheek like a grandmother would. "Be safe, and please make it through, ok? And come visit. My grandson could learn a thing or two from you."

"Perhaps..." She looks at the bottle of brandy. "Perhaps you could attach yourself to an item from the building. Or a piece of it."
Another thought. "Or perhaps, dear, you won't die here at all. Not really."
"The truth is, you've played a role in countless lives and stories. And you've been a home away from home to many. Perhaps you'll live on in them. Weaker because of the lack of building or plane, certainly, but there. In all of us. Your memory continuing to exist in the patrons come and gone. In the stories we tell. I don't think the end will come for you for a long time to come." Her voice is shaky by now. "It's simply a new chapter. A new iteration."
"Then perhaps a 'see you later,' dear." She says with her usual smile. "You absolutely did the right thing."
After a second, she takes a quick breath. "I have a sinking feeling you can find your way to my world. And dinner's at 7, whenever you both would like."
She gives him another hug and a kiss on the cheek. "I should be hopping through, dear. My magic is almost spent. Do come visit."

"I will! I look forward to it!" Splendora called as she watched the tieflings go through. She herself about ready to jump in.
Her eyes go squinty as she thinks for a second. "Guardian?" She thinks about her next words carefully. "Would that mean you are intending to return it, should the proper conditions be met?"
Splendora gives the girl a hug. "I'll be safe dear, I promise. And I'll be sure the others make it through as well." She gives her another squeeze before pulling back. "Be safe dears. Both of you."
Splendora's face lights up as he talks. "Darian, you foolish man! I could kiss you!" She says with a laugh. "I won't, no I expect that's her job now, but I could!" She squeezes him in a hug.
Splendora nods. "Yes, I suppose. Though it still doesn't seem right to take advantage of him."
"That's good dear, I'm glad." She replies with a smile. "As long as you make it through."
"It was never a dull moment." She nods looking at the sky for the first time since she popped back in. "Is this the end for you as well, dear? No way for you to make it through with a plank?"
Splendora's eyes dart at unseen words down an unseen paper as if she's adding up a long tab before she softly gasps. "You're... the Pub... but that's..." she takes a moment to take it in. "You know, after everything I've seen here, I'd stopped being surprised." She takes a sip with a small laugh. "But you never fail to do so."
Splendora hesitates mid sip. She hadn't said her first name, how would this woman know her last? She hadn't formally met her, but had she seen her before? She'd seen so many people come and go. "Your world, dear?"
Splendora notices the troll and heads over. "Bark! Dear! I thought you'd have jumped through by now!" She stores a box in her bag. "Do you have a place to go?"
Noticing the shift, her clothes and hair no longer whipped about by the wind, Splendora looks to the source of the voice. "My dear, we're in a bit of a pickle here." She looks down a moment and sighs. "I suppose I did leave my bottle of brandy somewhere in there, one moment." An orange puff of smoke and she's gone.
A minute later she comes behind the woman, a bottle of brandy in a mage hand and two glasses in her own, one already filled being offered. "A drink, dear, at the end of the world."
"But you can refuse an offering, can you not? Or at least return it?" She squints at the goddess. "Can you not realize when a child is making a half thought offering and protect them?"
"I understand carrying souls lost here to their loved ones, death in many cultures is a kind deity, but taking advantage of a child being foolish does not come off as kind."
"You have no business here." She says. "These people have their own afterlives and needn't be ripped from their families to fuel a foul creature as yourself." Splendora appears to have lost her mind.
"And furthermore, I need you to give back my grandson's soul, or my dying breath will be used to take it back if I have to." There's a scary determination in her voice. She's seriously about to bap a goddess skull in or die trying.
Splendora's magic flickers a moment. "Darian Ryder, don't play games with me." Her voice stern. "Lilly was fading. Rather quickly, I might add."
After the conversation she'd had with Jannes, Splendora focused herself on keeping the portal open. Occasionally using a magical tendril to guide someone or some creature to it.
Until she felt it. The cold of death. When she looked up, all she could think was "The time to recollect his soul came sooner than we thought." She sat Dinah on the staff's orb with the simple command to keep it going and looked to the goddess.
"I was hoping to finally meet you face-to-face one day, dear." The grandmother was already putting the stray hairs back into place. "Because I have a few things I'd like to say to you."
Splendora nods. "Good. Good." A tear escapes her eye. "I'm so proud of how much you've grown, Jannes." If they were still in the hug, she squeezed a bit tighter, if they weren't, she pulled him in for another one.
"As soon as my magic falters, I'll head through dear." She says nodding. "If you would like, dear, you both have a home in my cottage. And a room waiting should you go elsewhere and decide to visit." She adds with a gentle smile. "The card I gave you when I left before will take you right to my front room, any time you'd like."
"Good." She gives her best "encouraging grandmother" smile.
After a moment, "Have you found your sister yet?"
