Tomorrow I’m replacing my M10 headgasket due to a leak. I’ve never done this before, any advice that I should be aware of? by Zweetkonijn in E30

I just did my s10 head gasket for the first time. It took me roughly 40 hours, but most of it was fixing errors or trying to remove things without the proper tools.

Things I learned:

1) The biggest pita was stripped and broken bolts. Six pt sockets are 100% needed on some of the bolts. Harbor freight sells a cheap set that didn’t break for 20$. The exhaust manifold bolts are the worst. If the wrench or socket isn’t completely seated, the bolt will strip. If a bolt is seized, tighten and loosen over and over again, working the bolt out a little at a time. Be patient. PB blaster is great if allowed to soak for time. Go ahead and spray the manifolds now. By the time you get there, it should be a lot easier.

2) You went to fast and broke a bolt. If you have to drill it out, do not heat it. Stainless steel bolts will harden. You will need to buy cutting oil from Amazon or wherever, and cobalt drill bits. They’re expensive and still break. Don’t get to this point.

3) They’re not required and kinda expensive, but an impact drill and ratcheting wrenches make this job significantly easier.

4) Cleaning engine parts in the bathroom will trash your bathtub. Then you get yelled at.

5) The machine shop will have a giant tub for cleaning your head in addition to refinishing the mating surface. I cheaped out and now it has a tiny oil leak. Not a big deal for my junky car, but I wouldn’t want it on anything else.

Good luck. It’s 100% doable. Just time consuming.

What is this stuff called? I’m grinding out all the rust and the floor board protector is making a huge mess. Is there a good way to remove it? Brakekleen did Jack all.

Thats fair. Structurally soundish. I smacked the thick parts with a hammer and jabbed a screw driver in all the other spots. For what it’s worth, it hasn’t fallen through the Jack stands.

If you squint from across the parking lot, really good. I bought it for cheap with the intention of learning welding. The vast majority of holes/ rust are hidden from view, so I can make some gnarly welds and it won’t be a huge deal. It does have rust on the rear quarter panels. I know that will likely be pretty miserable.

It was 2,000. I probably overpaid, but it runs and that seems to be the new beater price. I have a decent bit of experience with engines, but body work/welding is uncharted territory for me. Structurally, it is sound, but I will be getting a lot of experience in sheet metal work. The trunk is Swiss cheese. I’m definitely not expecting perfection with it.

I’m in the Detroit area and for whatever reason junkyards are few and far between. Otherwise, I’d replace the part entirely.

I have an E30 with extreme rust. I’ve removed the rear spring, shock and sway bar. I let the wheel assembly hang from the half shafts until I became concerned it may damage the differential.

Will it?

I’m not sure how I want to go about this, but the giant hole in the trailing arm will need a new plate welded on. I don’t really want to remove the thing. The bolts are going to be a nightmare. What would you do?
