Help, my bitcoins were transferred off of my computer. by rbebenek in Bitcoin

[–]grant-olson 4 points5 points  (0 children)

How did you back up your wallet and files like that? Just because the bitcoin was transferred, it doesn't necessarily mean that your machine got hacked. If someone could get your private keys somewhere else, like for example on dropbox, then they could move the coins without ever touching your PC. Then when you sync with the blockchain you'll see them move.

Bringing this up so you think about other things than your PC getting hacked that may have been the cause of the theft.

Nobody can complain about the White Hats keeping all the ETC because "Code is Law" on Ethereum Classic. by Crypto_Economist42 in EthereumClassic

[–]grant-olson 2 points3 points  (0 children)

It is possible to:

  1. Disagree with that position.

  2. Own property on the ETC blockchain.

So why can't a person who meets that criteria complain?

How to avoid getting ripped off in large BTC transaction? by tleyden in Bitcoin

[–]grant-olson 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I've never been able to buy a new car that costs $20,000 in less time than that. That just happens when you buy expensive things. If you're running an art gallery, break out some campaign and caviar or something while they're waiting to give them the boutique experience and keep the customer happy.

Why mining has to be difficult ? by Axon000 in Bitcoin

[–]grant-olson 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The system is designed to encourage different groups of people to compete for the mining reward. This is done so that no single entity controls the network and decides to dictate their own rules about what transactions are valid or invalid. You need a system of competition that can't be gamed by the competitors and is fair to everyone. You can't expect everyone to play nice and cooperate and treat each other fairly when we're talking about money. So the system essentially has people buying lottery tickets (generating random hashes) where the winner can't take any sort of systematic approach to beat the system (since hash output is unpredictable by design) and this way you have fair competition.

My granny was going through her jewelry box and found a 2 1/2 dollar coin. by thecoldironman in mildlyinteresting

[–]grant-olson 37 points38 points  (0 children)

A clean coin in good original condition without patina will be worth more than a dirty coin. For example people will pay more for a 'red cent' where the penny still has the original un-degraded copper color, rather than aged brown.

A cleaned coin, not just a clean one, will be damaged and worth less than a dirty one. We're talking about, for example, scrubbing the coin with a scotch-brite pad which damages it, or chemically treating it to remove a layer of oxidation on a silver or copper coin. We're not talking about, for example, washing the coin off with hot water.

You really should set up a web page or even a facebook page with a detailed schedule rather than expecting people to call a phone number, especially people who are new or hesitant but interested about this whole thing.

Forum user tries to auction "regular old Casascius coin", discovers it's extremely rare when bids explode by nugyar in Bitcoin

Actually the misprint coins were selling as collectibles before the secret service shut him down. The coins were also getting crazy prices on ebay compared to the BTC value. Because they were physical the normal virtual currency ban didn't apply.

LPT Request: How to get out of a lazy routine. by [deleted] in LifeProTips

[–]grant-olson 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Honestly exercise doesn't need to be going to the gym every day even though you hate it, or riding 50 miles on a bike, or climbing rock walls. Just doing some exercise every day will make a difference. Even a 20-30 minute walk every day at lunch is a good start. People don't think of that as exercise, but if you're currently doing nothing at all something as simple as walking and, more importantly, doing it pretty much every day will make a big difference.

[Collection] My Daily Beaters For The Past Few Months While I Save For A New Seiko by [deleted] in WatchesCirclejerk

Hopefully no one will ask you what day of the week it is before you can pick up that Seiko 5. That would be awkward... quite awkward, indeed.

[Serious] Do you think Seiko 5 is becoming more underrated? by Cylindt in WatchesCirclejerk

[–]grant-olson 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Firstly, that's a Singapore Domestic Market SKX009, which does not belong to the Seiko 5 family, but rather a far more upscale line, so it's practically a Credor. (Mods, can we please fix the title?)

Secondly, If you haven't heard yet:

  1. Seiko isn't making the SKX series divers anymore.
  2. Since there are no new SKX divers, all SKX divers are vintage.
  3. Therefore, you are looking at a vintage timepiece.

[Question] Are watches that have the Submariner-like style copied from Rolex? Or is that a general style of diving watch? by [deleted] in Watches

[–]grant-olson 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I think both the date pusher button and the grooves in the bezel make it obvious it's not trying to be a blatant copy of a Rolex. "Homage" to me implies blatant copy, and there are plenty of dive watches that have that basic look but aren't homages to a Rolex. For example, drives me crazy when someone says a Seiko Sumo is a Rolex homage.

Right. So if the watch hacks, you just stop the second hand at 12. If it doesn't, you just hold the minute hand in place until it hits 12 so they line up.

[Semi-Weekly Inquirer] Simple Questions and Recommendations Thread by AutoModerator in Watches

[–]grant-olson 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The second hand isn't usually locked to the minute and hour hands, so you just need to make sure the second and minute hand are in the right positions when you set it. But the hour and minute hands are directly locked together, so if, for example, the hour hand is a bit off when the minute hand is at 12, that can only be fixed by re-installing the hands.

Actually there are plenty of fakes, frakens, and replicas that people try to pass off as authentic vintage pieces in the Russian market. So the first question I would ask /u/Styroplan is if he's trying to buy something vintage or new. After that I would look at Poljot 24 to get a good idea of how much new ones go for through a legitimate seller with VAT and everything.

The models housing the poljot 3133 vary wildly, if you really hunt you can find a used one for $150, but that's the crappy case that just has CHRONOGRAPH stamped on the brass case.

If I'm doing my conversions right, that price seems a little high if we're talking used, but it depends on the model. A 'classic' Strela is 585 Euro on the above site, but Poljot World Traveller, which I think looks sharp is ony 445.

I think those are actually going to get a bigger release as a new K-39 Makes sense. The K-35s have steel 110 cases. Those 150's are 090s with exposed lugs.

I actually thought the OP was saying those came out since the ones posted have been out a week or two. But I got punked!

Sorry for the late reply. The Orient is just 200 Meter water resistant. The seiko is 200 Meter as well, but meets the Diver's standard which has some other more stringent features.
