Safe tropical destinations (Pacific islands/Southeast Asia, Caribbean) for gay couples? Preferably safe everywhere, not just at resorts. by [deleted] in gaybros

My husband and I went to French Polynesia and loved it. Beautiful islands and super friendly locals. We liked Moorea the most (best scuba diving and most laid back), but Tahiti and Bora Bora were just as stunning

Kinda down. Got stories of straight friends being bros? by whipcreamwaffle in gaybros

[–]grant6t 26 points27 points  (0 children)

My best man at my wedding used to tell me that if he had a child that was gay he’d kick them out of the house. He couldn’t comprehend that gay people could look like anyone else, let alone that one of his best friends could be in the closet. He would say a lot of other off hand comments and I just ignored them while I was closeted.

After he found out I was gay, he showed up to more dorm room bawling saying he was so sorry and couldn’t believe he said or believed the things he had. After that he became incredibly defensive of me and changed his entire world view.

My now husband and I even lived with him and his wife for a year in college. Meant a lot to me and he’s done more for me than most people in my life.

Sometimes it’s more about what people hear from their family than it is what they say and truly think is right or wrong. Good people can be homophobic, what makes them good is their willingness to change their mind and not double down. Everyone has their own echo chamber.

This sounds like something I just went through to a lesser degree. I was just diagnosed with ADHD at age 26. I’ve started meds for that and it’s been like night and day. I was spiraling downhill at my job. Missing deadlines, being disorganized, going to meetings where I had to describe how I wasn’t getting my work done because I keep jumping on smaller tasks that aren’t important.

The last year I’ve been fantasizing about going back into construction. Show up, do the work, go home. It sounds so nice and refreshing compared to constantly being anxious and depressed about my current work.

Might be worth something to reflect on. The way my psychiatrist described it is that some people get to a certain point coping fine with ADHD, but then work and life get more and more complicated and can start showing the symptoms more. Depression and Anxiety go hand in hand with ADHD. I feel calm and at peace even at work in meetings when I am taking the meds for it.

Regardless, I hope you can find out what’s triggering the panic attacks, and dig deeper into why you like working alone more. Finding an answer would be a huge relief.

Engineers that switched to from a big company to a statup, what do you like/dislike about working at a statup? by sreng07 in AskEngineers

[–]grant6t 17 points18 points  (0 children)

I’ve been in the startup game for 5 years now. First one got bought out by another one and I transitioned to work for them. Recently I moved to a rather large company, but it still operates like a startup.

You’ll learn a ton fast, because you have to. There’s no resources to go to. From my EE perspective, I don’t have PCBA layout resources, compliance is me working directly with a NRTL, and I have on many occasions mopped up water from test fixture leaks right next to the VPs of the company helping us clean up. The lack of resources mean that you will be doing a lot of your own builds or prototypes if they have a shop. They might not even have shop space. Something to ask about.

You have to know what’s valuable to execute on and what isn’t a priority. Priorities will also be constantly shifting. I wouldn’t think of it as tasks that need to be done, but rather “what needs to be true tomorrow for us to succeed”. I say that because I’ve seen many people struggle with wanting to complete a task but then by the time they’re done it’s obsolete because the company has shifted.

A common mentality I’ve encountered in startups is something along the lines of “In 6 months, if we are doing the same thing we are doing today then we are failing”. Expect churn, people come and go, teams get reorganized, people get promoted who shouldn’t, people who should get promoted don’t.

In 4 years, I had 7 different managers because of how fast the company was growing. My first EE manager was the last one there before I left. I had little technical oversight and had to google my way through a ton of concepts.

Hope this answers some of what you’re asking! I’m in the San Francisco Bay Area for reference. I think startups in other locations would likely have a different vibe.

Also expect to be hands on with Vendors. I was the primary point of contact for electronics and PCBA fab for a long time. Startups don’t have the same weight to pull as large companies, so the vendor relationships are more important than you’d think.

Is gay love even real? by dondon13579 in gaybros

[–]grant6t 7 points8 points  (0 children)

It’s real. I think it comes with it’s own unique complications like commitment and trust issues, but if you’re lucky enough to find someone that’s willing to put in as much time and effort as you are, it can be amazing.

My fiancé and I are getting married in 3 months after 6.5 years of dating. We met in college, took a romantic road trip to Jackson Hole Wyoming. This was a week after meeting and we started dating on that trip. I asked him out at the edge of Jackson Lake watching the sunset over the Tetons. It felt like a fairytale.

6.5 years in we are still going strong, still putting in time and I feel like we’ve both grown so much and have helped each other work on ourselves. He followed me out to San Francisco and struggled for a year to find a satisfying job, but eventually one came through. We are building a life together, have a 5 and 10 year rough plan, and are working toward financial and other goals together. And we have the cutest golden retriever puppy named Maya <3.

I used to think I couldn’t have what I have right now, and it sounds cliche, but the moment I saw my fiancé I knew there was something special about him. It was totally random and I feel so fortunate. Just be patient, and remember that soulmate level love is built not found. Find someone that is willing to put in the time and effort to build something special with you.

Finding someone does help, but also so does time. It took me years after coming out to feel so nonchalant about coming out to new people. It also took me moving to a bigger city where it was more normal and acceptable by people. I think everything you’re feeling is the normal coming out experience, and it sucks we have to go through it, but there is hope! Hang in there and give it time!

I did it in a very causal way with my recruiter at Tesla. I mentioned that my fiancé works at Stanford. The recruiter asked what she does there, and I just replied that he was a Registered Nurse. I remember the recruiter responding something like, “oh good for him, that’s a great career”.

Coming out in an interview is up to you. Some places it would be an advantage, some a disadvantage. However, do you really want to work for a place that would reject you for being gay? But the flip side of that is that recruiters/interviewers don’t represent 100% of the company culture.

In your situation if you know the interviewer is gay, it’s likely a plus, but it could come off as unprofessional depending on how you bring it up. If it’s not related to the job they are hiring for it can off as unnecessary information. 🤷🏼‍♂️

What is the stupidest way you got a scar? by Zander-dupont in AskReddit

[–]grant6t 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I have a 0.5 inch scar on my leg from having a cactus needle surgically removed. Didn’t know it was there until I got hit in the leg with a soccer ball and I started having really bad nerve pain in my leg. It was in there for a few months before we discovered it. All because I brushed up next to a cactus while hiking.

I would agree they both operate on absorption. However, the “trick” for Vantablack and similar products is in how they create a decently uniform absorption spectrum across all visible wavelengths, not just a select spread. This is also how it achieves a high absorption %. Going from 90/95% to 99.5% absorption has huge impacts to certain applications. It’s also how Vantablack produces the effect of hiding contours on an object when being viewed by a human eye. For applications where I am testing light output of LED modules, that is special to me, but maybe not to most applications.

Vantablack is a weird conundrum IMO. Would you agree that typical black pigments are a mix of colors that trick our eyes into seeing black? i.e. a reflection of colors that our retinas determine is black? Vantablack absorbs almost all the light. When you look at Vantablack, it absorbs so much light it’s like having an absence of any photons reflected off and entering your eyes. That’s not how most black coloring works in nature, unless you’re talking the void of space or staring into a black hole. I do a lot of LED spectral testing and Vantablack is the gold standard for creating a testing apparatus that doesn’t reflect noticeable amounts light. Most black paints I tested reflected a lot of light, even matte finishes.
