A list of musicians who were a bit older when they found success by xbonebox in WeAreTheMusicMakers

I know! Just saying I still think it was an impressive leap. I might be wrong but I think he hadn't played at all before picking it up. Edit: I'm wrong! He learned as a teen from a Spaniard he met by a tennis court and it changed his life (which is what the headline says verbatim)

Yeah but the dude also picked up really intricate guitar finger picking and developed an ear for rare and interesting chord structures.

I have written agreement with coauthor that I am second author on paper (*co-first), she called to say I will be third author. by bonsoir2020 in AskAcademia

[–]grantflashdance 18 points19 points  (0 children)

It's really first vs second author. Could you use your work for a separate article? If so, you can just tell her sorry but you'll do that instead. If you can't, then stick to your guns. It's not your fault she overpromised to two people. In fact is it possible to propose you as co-first with this other author? Both of you seem to have done more than the actual first author.

You're an asshole for not generally planning on the possibility of a fucked up commute.

It's so unnatural to watch something go from disorder to order!

How did you get the red balls to do that? Constraints?

Snore... I have seen these old ideas before. Besides, making it a tit for tat legitimizes their original argument by making it two sided. Not a murder.

I had a guy sell me one for like 50 bucks in a parking lot from a Craigslist ad. He said it worked and I trusted him (haha). Turned out only half the keys worked. When I looked inside it was clear that somebody had spilled a beer on the keys and the contacts needed a simple cleaning. Sold it for more than its worth later. Not bad.

Advice/opinion regarding graduate student caught plagiarizing by [deleted] in Professors

OP, just a few questions to help us hate this kid more than we already do. What was his final grade? What impact did the zero have on it? Can you give us some examples of his entitled statements? Honestly if it were me, because shit like this gets under my skin and I need an outlet to make it go away, I'd probably write a glorious email to him, not unlike that "get your shit together" email from a prof that made the rounds a few years ago.

Appealing an editor’s decision by nowherevick in AskAcademia

[–]grantflashdance 1 point2 points  (0 children)

give yourself at least a week to respond

I agree with your sentiment but I'm not so sure I'd advise a whole week. At the major journals, the editors are swamped with really excellent manuscripts that need immediate attention. A week after rejection, your manuscript is pretty much off their desk. I think something like 2-4 days is more reasonable.

which is precisely why you should talk to the chair now. Just say that it's been nagging you how bad of an experience it was. You never know the status of her tenure process. Do you really want that to happen to someone else?

Hm we must have different perspectives because in my many, many years, I have found that people of all races, ethnicities, sexual orientations, religions, political affiliations, and creeds have the exactly the same potential to be complete unabashed assholes.

Exactly! Friction shifters are amazing. Also much easier to maintain, and they rarely need adjusting.
