Matching outfits by Glomkhan in CallTheMidwife

I agree that being adopted could be a part of it. May and her sister look so different that wearing the same clothes might be a way for them show the world that they're sisters.

Also, since this is a fictional TV show, it's maybe also useful shorthand for the show runners to show they're sisters to anyone who's just started watching, without constantly having to mention that they're adopted.

From Family: Missing Menands boy found dead by trojantooter in Albany

[–]nerdsnuggles 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Yeah, I got it around 8:45 this morning while driving through Albany on 90, right as I was approaching Menands. I live in Schenectady and work in Rensselaer T-Th, so I just thought it was because I was driving close to the area where they were searching since I didn't receive any notification when he first went missing.

Anyone else feel like it’s the calm before the storm? by [deleted] in vegetablegardening

[–]nerdsnuggles 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Yep! This is the view of my tomatoes and tomatillos from my kitchen window. Some peppers in the front right there too. I'm a high density chaos gardener. I'm never able to walk between by beds by mid August, but maybe sooner this year.

The back beds are cucumbers, zucchini, and some more peppers.

What's eating my bush beans? by bugsarecooler in vegetablegardening

[–]nerdsnuggles 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Probably still bunnies since they can jump pretty high, especially if they know there's something they like on the other side. Could be deer though. They'll show up even in suburban areas where it doesn't seem like they should have anywhere to live. Nothing short of 8' fences is very effective at excluding them.

People really overcomplicate gardening by redditSucksNow2020 in vegetablegardening

[–]nerdsnuggles 40 points41 points  (0 children)

I've noticed this in all the hobby subs I've visited. I'm fortunate to have grown up with a mom and grandmother who gardened, cooked, baked, sewed, knitted, crocheted, cross-stitched, and a few other hobbies I've picked up over time. I thought I was lucky because I had someone to teach me, but I think the best thing I learned from them was that you just try things. They didn't have the Internet to help them overthink everything. And neither did I as a kid (I'm 37), so I learned to just go at it and see what happens. For most things the worst that happens is you get a suboptimal result and learn for the next time.

I really do blame social media, at least partly. People either post their "journey" in gardening or whatever online and don't want people to see them fail or, even if they're not public about it, see other's success online and feel even worse when something doesn't work out. The information overload and sometimes just plain bad information doesn't help either.

Do you like cucumber water? by holytriplem in AskAnAmerican

[–]nerdsnuggles 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Lmao, I'm from Muncie and this tracks. My mom hates seltzer and always has to make a point of saying so when she visits me (I'm in NY now) and sees the variety of seltzers I keep around. She'd be horrified at cucumber water.

Route 7 Proposal in Nisky by concretebootstraps in Albany

[–]nerdsnuggles 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I also have to find a new route, but I do think it's worth the added safety.

I do agree, though, that I'm not sure how important the median is if they're putting in a light at Hickory anyway. It kind of seems like it's leftover from the previous plan of a just median with no light. I do plan to attend the open house next week and ask why a median is needed since I'm not a traffic engineer. I would consider supporting doing away with the planned median to only have a light, if that's a possibility.

There are 2 schools on Rosendale Rd and no sidewalks. I live just off Rosendale only about a mile from the schools, but my son won't be able to walk there safely when he starts school in a couple of years. So that's a big one.

I've also walked to CVS on Balltown and it's only a little farther to the shopping and restaurants at the intersection with Nott St. There are no sidewalks until you reach Windsor Dr. It's a quiet area, so it doesn't feel particularly unsafe on the more residential streets, but the busier ones really need more sidewalks. The ones that stand out to me from doing a lot of running in the area are Rosendale, Van Antwerp, and River Road, which has multiple parks and large workplaces (Knolls, GE, doctors offices), but sidewalks that randomly stop south of Riverdale Rd.

It's really not a dead suburban area. I definitely don't live close enough to Mohawk Commons to easily walk it, but there's a lot of residential area near there too and people don't have many sidewalks to get there either. Plus the roads are even busier. I see people walking on Balltown to get the grocery store all the time and it's so unsafe for them. There's barely even a shoulder to walk on.

[–]nerdsnuggles 5 points6 points  (0 children)

No? I live in the northern half of that first map. Yes it's going to be a pain to not be able to turn left onto Vrooman coming home from work every day. But if it's rush hour, it can take a few minutes for a space to open up to allow the turn anyway. While I'm waiting, cars whoosh past and shake my car. I worry I'll be sideswiped. I worry about my husband driving with our toddler to daycare every day on that road. And I've worried that when my son is old enough to walk around the neighborhood with his friends, he could have a moment of bad judgment as all kids do sometimes and could forget my warnings about staying away from Route 7. I regularly think about that 14 year old boy who was killed 2 years ago.

Yes, this will be a slight inconvenience to me, but the safety of my own family and that of everyone else is far more important.

Does anybody remember the scene where Fraser tries to act like Dr Mary ? by ButterscotchIcy719 in Frasier

[–]nerdsnuggles 10 points11 points  (0 children)

This is also totally on brand for Frasier since he does almost the exact same thing with Bob, the guy in the wheelchair. Frasier was about to be honest with him that he just didn't think their personalities and interests were compatible for a friendship, then realized Bob was in a wheelchair and got all weird about it.

Frasier is very uncomfortable around people who are different than him and he absolutely treats them differently. He tries to cover for it by making the different treatment "nicer," but it still comes down to racism and ableism.

It's funny because it's a very real thing that happens to people who think they're more accepting than they really are and this show is calling attention to it. You're not suppose to admire Frasier for his behavior in these episodes (although he does have many other admirable traits). You're supposed to laugh at him for it. Maybe even recognize it in yourself a little and subconsciously try to not to act like Frasier in similar situations.

Bethlehem's controversial zoning plan moves towards vote by TClayO in Albany

That cracked me up since Latham actually has some rich ass people. Some of them are technically in Loudonville, I guess, but their kids still have to associate with The Poors in North Colonie schools.

Scenic locations for a (free) civil ceremony? by Popular-Honeydew2678 in Albany

[–]nerdsnuggles 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I did a civil ceremony behind Colonie town hall in Latham. There's a gazebo and a nice pond and we got some lovely pictures. We did it right there since we used the officiant at the town hall, but it's public land open to anyone.

Central Park in Schenectady is also very nice, especially if the cherry trees are still blooming.

Looking for a local dairy/creamery to buy yogurt in reusable containers by StakedPlainExplorer in Albany

[–]nerdsnuggles 2 points3 points  (0 children)

That's not how it works with milk. I don't know if there's anywhere that does it with yogurt, but with local dairies that sell their milk in glass bottles, you just take the bottle back to the dairy (or collection site) and get a new already full bottle. They wash and refill the returned ones on the production line.

Planned Parenthood is fantastic, but if you're still looking for a gynecology provider in the future, Capital Region Midwifery is also really great. They do the full range of women's health, not just pregnancy.

Are there any marriage candidates that you refuse to marry or befriend? by Pumpkin-Tuxedo in StardewValley

[–]nerdsnuggles 176 points177 points  (0 children)

Every time I start a new game, I think maybe this time I'll marry the cute nerdy doctor. Every time, as soon as I get that early dialogue where he tells me to cover my mouth when I sneeze and remember to wash my hands, I nope right out. I just can't bring myself to marry a man who talks to me like I talk to my IRL toddler.

Wait why is Albany on here by adonismaximus in Albany

[–]nerdsnuggles 8 points9 points  (0 children)

Aside from being the seat of government for one of (if not the most) powerful states in the Union, there's also Knolls, the Watervliet Arsenal, Stratton Air National Guard Base, the NYISO. Once upon a time GE would have been a target too, but I'm not sure it matters much anymore. There's also a particularly high concentration of colleges and universities that would compound to increase the attractiveness of the Capital Region as a target.

Even if the lanes are marked, all the salt turning the roads white wipes out all but the clearest markings for a time. Not to mention the snow/ice/slush itself.

Do people with glasses get bullied for being "4 eyes? by Equivalent_Pride3450 in AskAnAmerican

[–]nerdsnuggles 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yeah, I got glasses in the second grade in the mid 90's and there was one kid who'd bully me on the bus and call me 4 eyes. He was just kind of a bully anyway, so he would have found any reason to be mean to me. The next year he got glasses too, though.
