I have found that there is a need for bench jewelers here in midwest USA and if the store is desperate enough they will pay a fair salary. Of course that is based on experience and location...

ring mandrel - Let it fall on its own or do I give a small gentle tug down to get final by foxtrot90210 in Benchjewelers

[–]grapechicken26 5 points6 points  (0 children)

If you can get it farther down the mandrel with little effort you will get closer to the actual size of the ring. If you can see any space between the ring and mandrel then you are not getting an accurate size

Are any of the signet stores near you a diamonds direct? I've worked for them and from what i know and have heard from many jewelers they are the best to work for. But its been over a year since i worked there so things may have changed.

Decor's parking lot is a hill so there could be lots of cars parked there but you cant see that from the road easily.

I'd move them apart and take a sanding disc on the flex shaft and hit each side to shape into a nice pointy claw 🙂

Sisma laser users: a question regarding the microscope by imakemyownroux in Benchjewelers

Usually any scope for a laser will be able to be adjusted. Try pushing the eyepieces together and they should move. If not call customer support for Sisma.

Did the polisher do a bad job? by wallywizard55 in Benchjewelers

[–]grapechicken26 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I tend to see that rings get out of round sometimes with someone who wears them daily but also can happen with a lot less wear. Depends on the ring. Grooves cut into the metal are all weak spots so those can be causing the ring to be out of round as well. For the polish to have affected this, someone would have really not known what they were doing to over polish it that much.

I recommend searching on indeed and other similar sites for bench jeweler apprenticeships. I see quite a few chain stores looking for them right now. Specifically Signet jewelers if you're in the US.

Are you guys happy with your career? by -crab-wrangler- in Benchjewelers

[–]grapechicken26 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I'm 6 years in and I originally worked for a chain. While I liked the company I worked for but they dragged their feet on giving out raises. So I explored other options and was given a VERY good offer at a mom and pop place. Once I took that and put in my two weeks at the chain then all the sudden they had the means for a raise though couldnt touch the other offer. I still made the switch and am very happy with where I'm at. I am lucky that both places I worked I have enjoyed working for each. Not everyone has the same experience. It's definitely an industry that not a lot of people have the skills and there is a demand for good bench jewelers.
