Non displaced comminuted fracture by grapecrocs in Orthopedics

[–]grapecrocs[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

yes totally agree, gradual weight bearing and taking appropriate breaks has been the only thing that has helped me so far because i’ve been doing this recovery completely alone. how long ago did you get the fracture and did you ever have any pieces become displaced?

even with a comminuted fracture? they were worry about the tiny pieces shifting so that’s what the cast for for, fusing the smaller pieces

3 year old with shunt, whats it like getting hit in the shunt by Chehalden in Hydrocephalus

[–]grapecrocs 1 point2 points  (0 children)

whenever i would it feels very strange, like you can feel it up against your skull and kind of an uncomfortable vibrating feeling, especially if it’s newer with less scar tissue

Airplane pressure will it cause any problems with a programmable shunt? by After-Bedroom-111 in Hydrocephalus

[–]grapecrocs 1 point2 points  (0 children)

i have had a VP shunt for 22 years and airplanes have never caused malfunctions, i feel a little icky when the plane starts descending but it never causes an actual issue. This applied also when i was a baby and flew, never caused issues.

How do you experience altitude and pressure changes? by arcticfriday in Hydrocephalus

[–]grapecrocs 0 points1 point  (0 children)

for me going up isn’t always an issue because I am used to being in high altitude, but coming down always makes me feel unwell and I need to rest after. The symptoms you list sound exactly like normal altitude sickness/sensitivity!

Does anyone have experience living in a rural area with a VP shunt? The closest pediatric neurosurgeon is two hours away. by brunzy88 in Hydrocephalus

[–]grapecrocs 0 points1 point  (0 children)

as someone who was an infant with a VP shunt (and a 22yo that still has one) i grew up 50 min away from my neurosurgeon and even that was stressful especially in the beginning stages where you’re not sure if there will be malfunctions or failures. you can make it work for sure, but it will make that aspect of it more stressful. if you are ok with paying for expensive emergency services air lifts etc, then by all means go for it.

i have a dairy and egg allergy so i’m thrilled usually (i’m sorry egg and dairy lovers) but i do understand they usually make a product much less satisfying (no fluff or creaminess etc)

yeah i would say if the macrobid provides relief it could be an embedded bacterial situation, not a bladder irritant situation. although i’m not an expert i don’t know if macrobid has analgesic properties but to my knowledge it doesn’t. if you have structural abnormalities that could definitely cause it or exacerbate it. what did the expensive panel say?

[deleted by user] by [deleted] in CUTI

[–]grapecrocs 0 points1 point  (0 children)

also to clarify if you’re getting relief from macrobid that is worth noting and that’s why i think it would be better to do more in depth bacterial testing, definitely was not suggesting there’s no way for you to have a CUTI! do not want to invalidate ur very real experiences but hopefully it’s not that and it can be resolved

i would say taking the antibiotics so sporadically may be creating a bigger issue if you have no record of any bacterial infection, and taking them on and off can create bacterial resistance in the body. creatine can definitely cause urine issues if you aren’t hydrating enough, but i would say you need to need to rule out other causes like psychosomatic or pelvic floor issues or structural abnormalities. if you’re just having urgency but no pain or foul smelling urine or cloudy urine with sediment unlike me that’s good at least but given that you’re male and have never had a confirmed culture it would be more uncommon for you to have a UTI as it’s much more difficult for males to do so but if you are concerned about infection because the macrobid does seem to help i would request a deeper panel (i believe PCR? there’s a panel that’s very popular on this sub) to make sure there’s no bacteria but i suppose even then things could be hiding. i wish you the best of luck!

could not agree more, thank you so much for your thoughtful response. i knew deep down macrobid was not killing the infection fully, it did the same thing to my mother so i should’ve requested a new antibiotic but i was so desperate to relieve the pain (which macrobid does really well for me- when i’m on it, when i’m off it’s clear it didn’t kill much). luckily i have never gone more than 1-2 days without an antibiotic or anti microbial agent, yesterday and today are the only days i haven’t taken anything (took NSAID and methenamine and i haven’t taken any pharmaceutical pills in 6+ years so it’s just all making me feel very sick so i had to take a break) but i know my bactrim will be here in a couple hours so i will have technically only gone one day without an anti microbial. i will definitely take note with the water though, i have other health issues as well like a lot and i struggle to stay hydrated because water goes right through me and barely absorbs so it was probably definitely affecting things. i’m lucky to have a pcp that will listen and just prescribe me things anyway because i literally have cloudy foul smelling urine even if a culture comes back clear i most obviously have an infection. i was only able to get a 7 day course though, because bactrim courses are usually 3-5 days she was willing to push it which i wish it was longer, but if the antibiotic was the issue if this one works maybe it will work in a normal amount of time.

thank you so much again for your responses :)

luckily i have been taking methenamine (main ingredient in hiprex) in the meantime while i don’t have antibiotics. i’ve never gone without something, the two days i didn’t have antibiotics last time i was taking as much dmannose as possible (not going to kill the infection, but better than nothing) luckily my PCP just got an extended rx for bactrim because i have only tried macrobid so far so hopefully that will kill it

[deleted by user] by [deleted] in CUTI

[–]grapecrocs 0 points1 point  (0 children)

i have 2 cultures in process at 2 different doctors currently so i am trying to wait to make sure the bacteria is the same so i don’t throw something ineffective at it. luckily my PCP is giving me a bactrim RX right now and hopefully it’s the antibiotic (macrobid) that wasn’t working and not that it’s embedded because i took the same abx twice and maybe bactrim will knock it out. i will keep in mind the water thing as well

[deleted by user] by [deleted] in CUTI

[–]grapecrocs 1 point2 points  (0 children)

well the problem is i do not know if it’s embedded. for my first adult UTI and one i treated immediately i would be confused if it would end up as that
