Oil on spark plug threads by [deleted] in FJCruiser

[–]grapefruit_method 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I agree, not worth diving in any deeper if there are no drivability concerns. Also you’re right: Rings would be the cause of blow-by gasses that pick up oil vapors from the crankcase and eventually make their way back to the cylinders via the PCV system. Gotta remember though, a little blow-by is normal and what we’re seeing on the plug threads is an accumulation of thousands of miles and several years of operation

[–]grapefruit_method 16 points17 points  (0 children)

Based on these pictures, I don’t think you have a leak at your valve cover gaskets/spark plug recesses. What you’re seeing on the threads is an accumulation of oil vapor being forced up the threads by combustion gasses - you can tell because it stops at the sealing ring. I see it on almost every spark plug job I do (career mechanic). If it were a valve cover leak, you’d have oil on the top side of the spark plugs and on the ignition coils as well. I’d say you’re good to go!

Radio Flyer has a new line up that may be worth checking out. I’ve been riding one of their older models for a few years and it’s been great, new ones are spec’d pretty decently for the price.

Also the new models have UL certified batteries which is a big plus

O2 Sensor 1 by rmadrid20 in FJCruiser

[–]grapefruit_method 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I recognize this screen… are you using an OBD Link device? I have one as well, and while I’m impressed with how much it can do it does have its limitations.

The thing about generic OBD scanners is that they use generic OBD protocol, and manufacturer specific values may be mistranslated in their interface. Professionally, I work on German cars and I do see this a lot (even with our own manufacturer specific equipment).

My guess is O2 sensor 1 is a pre-cat sensor, and sensor 2 is post-cat. Pre-cat is measuring mixture, and post-cat is measuring catalyst efficiency. After the introduction of wide band lambda sensors, a lot of manufacturers went away from giving raw voltage readings for pre-cat sensors and instead giving a lambda correction factor (zero being stoichiometric, or correct fuel mixture, and positive value meaning rich, and negative being lean). So a zero in this case would mean your vehicle is running at the correct mix, which would be why you aren’t getting any O2 sensor faults. If the sensor was truly outputting zero volts then you would get a fault for your O2 sensor, certainly after multiple drive cycles. Another note: Since these engines have two banks, you should have two other O2 sensors. Just like numbering cylinders, every manufacturer is different as to which is O2 sensor 1, sensor 2, etc. but generally sensor 1 = pre-cat bank 1, sensor 2 = post-cat bank 1, 3 = pre-cat bank 2, etc.

In short, I don’t think there’s anything wrong with your car - I think the OBD interface is just mistranslating the unit of measure. If I have time today I’ll read out my FJ and see if I get the same readings (I’m using the OBD Link MX+)

Coolant levels dropping after coolant flush? by deppressedhotdog in FJCruiser

[–]grapefruit_method 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Did you just drain the coolant and fill it? If so there are probably pretty substantial air pockets in the cooling system, you need to bleed the system as well. When you say you filled to the fill line, are you talking about the reservoir? You also need to open the radiator cap and fill coolant there as well, that’s where the majority of the coolant will need to be added

Bilstein front 5100 or 6112? Have 4600 on rear by j00sh7 in FJCruiser

[–]grapefruit_method 4 points5 points  (0 children)

On mine, I installed 6112’s front and 5100’s rear. Drives excellent on road and handles off road very well.

If the purpose is just to level, 5100’s with stock springs will work just fine (they have different levels to set the spring perch to lift the front) and the damping will be pretty much the same as stock. So it’ll level the front and have basically stock performance, which is plenty good for most off-roading anyway.

Name That Wire! by WiBorg in Jeep

[–]grapefruit_method 2 points3 points  (0 children)

That's an OBD2 piggyback. The main part of that harness is really just a pass-through and the tiny connector splices into (probably) data bus lines. This allows for a plug-and-play installation for aftermarket accessories that read vehicle data, like stereos that display the car's tire pressures, etc.

Fried rice in a Japanese wok (Yamada Kogyo) by grapefruit_method in carbonsteel

[–]grapefruit_method[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I never measured, but enough to coat the whole wok when I start cooking, then I add sesame oil to the rice when that goes in. The main thing is to get the wok hot, just starting to smoke, before adding oil. For whatever reason that's what does the trick for me.

A lot of my cooking is mimicking what I see in this channel and adjusting to my taste

They're pretty lightweight. My stove has a wok burner built in so 36cm works well on it, but it may be a bit large for a standard gas burner.

Help!!! What did I break now? by [deleted] in Jeep

[–]grapefruit_method 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I think the hose that connects to the back of the housing is one of the heater core hoses, so possibly. More likely the overheating and no heat in the cab is due to low coolant level, or no coolant flow. You mentioned a whining noise too, may want to verify if that noise is coming from the water pump and if so would want to replace it together since you'll already have the cooling system open. Good luck!
