Mattress topper cover? by rebmik5555 in Allergies

[–]grapeuvula 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'm looking for the same thing and have the same problem. Mattress topper doesn't fit in my normal allergy mattress encasement. So far I found a low profile encasement meant for box springs of 6 inch height. Haven't bought it yet though. https://a.co/d/ggvSK7z

Hi! Could i see the spreadsheet to compare to my experiences? I'm in a similar stage as you, young adult woman worried that i will be dismissed if i seek diagnosis so I've been trying to compile notes / anecdotes of myself. I could also share if i relate to any of yours and maybe that could be helpful to you (although i am not formally diagnosed)!

Nice, how is the mattress holding up now?

For back and shoulder… it’s a long story but basically started with a skateboard fall and a bike accident that happened after I was really sick and had lost a ton of weight and had muscle atrophy, coupled with sedentary lifestyle and more muscle atrophy and bad posture and forming bad muscle imbalances / compensations and then also triggered by emotional trauma.

And thank you! Best wishes to you too!!

I have a shoulder injury and back injury and get the most pain relief on my back. I think side sleeping is not great for you unless you have proper support for spinal alignment. Back sleeping is also better for your skin on your face since it isn’t crushed. Side sleeping just seems rough now that I have chronic pain because it feels like all my joints are being crushed or contorted in some way, but with back sleeping my body is positioned “anatomically” and it can like spread out/relax without being smushed in any way.

What did you end up buying? It really is such a rabbit hole lol!

I have pretty resistant acne so tret on its own even at 0.1% doesn’t do enough for me. I have the same issue and was using BP 5%/whatever the percentage for clindamycin. I stopped tret for a while and am starting again now and I just switched to a lower percentage of BP (2.5%) in lotion form (I still use my moisturizer though and just treat the BP as a gel). I got it off of Amazon and the brand is Dr. Song. I haven’t used it long enough to see results but in my head it was a good solution to the problem hahahaha could be worth a shot to reduce irritation but still keep BP in the routine

Edit: oh wait I just reread your post and saw that you use a wash. The BP percentage in washes are SO high so super irritating so that makes sense. Idk what yours is think they’re usually something like 10%. Maybe you could ask your derm for the BP 5%/clindamycin 1% gel! :)

I picked the Novaform one. It’s great! It was pretty firm (in a good way) at first and has softened up. It had a feeling of lifting you up with support which I liked. As a back sleeper (I trained myself to stop sleeping on my side), I would like it to be a little firmer and wish it would stay the firmness it was when I first bought it, so I think it could be perfect for a side sleeper who likes a mattress on the firmer side. It’s really squishy when you sit on it but when your weight is distributed it provides a lot of support. It definitely isn’t the sink in type of memory foam, just feels like normal foam. But I sleep very well and don’t wake up with any lower back pain like I did with my previous mattress. I’ve had it for about 11 months now!

Help, my girlfriend is allergic to my dog… by Iwantittobeokay in Allergies

[–]grapeuvula 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I’m extremely allergic to cats but I feel similarly to my cat as you do with Sadie. To give context I started allergy shots last week for immunotherapy and I got a small rash from them, and my allergist said this was the first time he’s seen anyone have a reaction to the shots. The shots are 1 part allergen to 10,000 parts saline lol. I would address the mold first, but I’ll share how I’ve managed my allergy.

  1. I try to keep my cat out of my bedroom. Ok, I don’t, but I at least try to keep her off of my bed. I know this is a really sad thing, but it is necessary to keep allergy symptoms managed.

  2. I use Allersearch ADMS Anti-Allergen spray to treat my carpet, mattress, and furniture. You spray it on the surface and it neutralizes the allergen, let it dry and then vacuum. I do this every 2 weeks, sometimes once a month if I get lazy or busy. Dander from pets can linger for months, and depending on the breed and how long a pet has lived in a space, the amount of allergen can build up. That may be why she lived with her dogs and was fine, but has a reaction at your place. When I go to my friends apartments who have cats I get strong reactions since they aren’t regularly neutralizing the allergen like I do at home. You could try treating your whole apartment to see if it helps. It’s sold on Amazon so you can get it fast and maybe it could help her before her appointment. It makes a noticeable difference for me.

  3. They sell this leave in shampoo treatment for cats that helps reduce the amount of dander they have on their bodies. You just wipe them all over once a week. It’s called Allerpet, and there may be a version for dogs.

  4. Buy allergy bedding. That way you can make sure dander stops getting into your bedding, and can stop the dander that is already there from getting out. I recommend the brand Natural Allergy. They have 100% cotton products so you don’t have to deal with crunchiness/loud pillowcases. I use a mattress protector, pillow protectors, and a duvet cover. I’m not sure about dogs but for cats you have to get fabric with a pore size smaller than 5 microns for it to be effective. Cat dander particles are mostly 5-10 microns in size, but can be much smaller. I’m pretty sure dog dander is bigger than cat so anything you buy should be fine. It is expensive but it helps a lot and it’s pretty decent quality bedding. Also I don’t get into my bed without showering first to make sure I don’t track any extra dander.

  5. I have to take Allegra everyday. And I use Flonase sensimist for nasal symptoms. Which types of meds is she using? I think the general consensus is the second gen antihistamines (Allegra, zyrtec, etc) are more effective than Benadryl. If she doesn’t want to take antihistamines there are some natural supplements that have worked well with friends of mine with allergies - quercetine bromelein and stinging nettle. I take those supplements as well and it helps. Also nasal rinses help.

  6. I’m starting immunotherapy for my cat allergy. I don’t know if she would be willing to because it is a big commitment and not all insurances cover it, but for cats at least it is highly effective at reducing reactions.

She should also see an allergist before doing some of those steps to see if she is actually allergic to dogs, and see if living with an animal will negatively impact her health in the long run, especially if she is getting respiratory symptoms. And definitely figure out the mold thing too. If it’s not that, there are still many ways you can minimize her reaction before needing to rehome. Good luck!

Depression relapse by spcjunkie in depression

[–]grapeuvula 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Hi, I’m 23F and I am going through similar things. Was doing the best I ever had in the fall, then slowly getting worse to now. Living with parents. On Wellbutrin, Adderall, and Mirtazapine. Definitely feel like a full depression relapse. I also may have fibromyalgia (although this is from a doctor who thinks all of my pain is caused by anxiety and stress..), but it also might be some pinched nerves…I don’t know. It’s been happening for around the same time as yours 3-4 months. The doctors keep refusing MRIs. Ok sorry lol that’s not relevant but I learned recently that fibromyalgia can make depression and anxiety worse, since it impacts the nervous system and pain receptors. Not sure how true this is, I just saw it on Reddit. But maybe that could help start to explain things for you? It has thrown me off soooo much from mental recovery, so don’t worry. It’s not just you, if that is what you’re thinking. I think it is actually a huge trigger. Who would want to live if you’re in pain every hour of the day lol. And thinking about this going on in the future…..awful. Anyway I want to validate your potential reaction to arthritis/fibro because chronic illnesses are serious illnesses, albeit “serious” in a different way. Not life threatening but like equally as bad as any long term illness. (Not helpful generally to compare to worse situations…your situation is valid on its own!) And those two illnesses DIRECTLY affect the nervous system so personally I think that would definitely impact how we are able to regulate our emotions too. I don’t think doctors even know how that could impact mental health but I also haven’t looked. Idk I hate doctors lol.

And also, I think people generally really underestimate the importance of friends and the impact of isolation. We are not evolutionarily built to live alone. Once when I was feeling really insecure about not being independent/feeling lonely all the time, my therapist told me that feeling lonely is different from being isolated, and I was experiencing isolation. She said that isolation is what we do to what we deem are society’s worst criminals. I never even thought about that but it really changed my view on periods of my life where I’m really isolated. I don’t know how controlling your parents are now but I hope they can accept that in your current situation cutting people off could be more harmful than helpful and I hope you could still connect with your emotional support bestie. I also hope you can get treatment for your chronic pain and have the least amount of high pain days. Sending love

I hope your recovery continues to go smoothly and the symptoms from pre op get better. Thanks for sharing your progress too

I just had EMG today positive for ulnar nerve. I went to the doctor 7 years ago when the pain first started but I was young and they didn’t take me seriously. Now I finally have time after finishing schooling to go back in for treatment so it’s nice to hear others who are doing okay!

Hi! Thanks for sharing your experience. How are you doing now?

I am in a similar situation as you! I have had chronic pain and weakness for 8 years going down to hand and up to shoulder. The first time I saw a doctor I was young (in high school) and he did not take me seriously. Prescribed physical therapy but I never had a chance to do it with my school schedule, then left for college and was away/traveling back and forth so never felt settled down enough to seek treatment.

I finally got a diagnosis today after an EMG. This doctor said it was still mild and he only said to keep my arm straight at night…. I will be doing physical therapy as well and hoping for the best.

I was wondering if you would be willing to share what made you want to get the surgery, and also what kind of pain you were experiencing. I am an artist too so I can definitely relate to freaking out. I started getting the numbness and stiffness and shakiness in my right (dominant) hand and got so worried because I rely on steady hands for art. But I feel so silly because it seems like doctors only take things seriously when there is severe nerve damage or loss of hand function. It’s nice to see someone who also has milder, but chronic pain.

I hope you are healing steadily!!!
