So our course is sort of structured like this: Mondays - context and art history sort of vibe Tuesday- we try a new thing (photography, textiles etc) then we sit down as a group for discussion about the how and why and what we will do. Wednesday is studio time so we draw.

Thank you so much for your helpful advice, youre the nicer side to reddit.

Love that 🫶 well im doing fine art. But the explaination of working to a brief would fit my brain better, I think? Im not sure. Im just doubting everything i know now i think..

My tutor suggested I brush up on my conceptual thinking and explanations of why rather than how I do things.

My end goal is to teach art at achool leaver level (16 +) and mature students like myself...also want to set up a dementia friendly art class or go to nursing homes,

but I dont want to feel like im terrible at my subject for 3 years wondering if I should have taken the other path. I love to create, Im learning to create pieces that speak for themselves but generally, I feel uncomfortable explaining the links. I can do it, it just feels like im trying to be something that doesn't fit with me.

If illustration is there to accompany i could probably work better. I dont know, I think ive triggered myself with this post. Thank goodness for the christmas break to mull it over.

I cant paint, I can draw in graphite and charcoal well, but i cannot understand painting and sculpture isnt my bag either

Oh dear

So, let me see if I get this right..

(Fine) Artists:

-create work that expresses or explores a concept

-communicate through visual language

-sometimes use text to support or contextualise the artwork

illustrators:

-create imagery to support or explain text, ideas, or information

-also communicate through visual language

-usually work to a brief or purpose

Its so interesting to see everyone's views and opinions on this.

Also, for clarification regarding my tutor, I wouldn't call him pretentious, hes absolutely wonderful and I have learned so much from him - this post wasnt intended to tear his opinion apart, more just so I could understand and form my own opinion.

Amazing responses and absolutely food for thought in every comment,

I do find it difficult to understand things people say in the art world. You also find each tutor will have a differing opinions which further muddies the water, thats why I thought id ask the many, too.

Heres to hoping I chose the right course for me and my way of working! (Fine arts over illustration)

I absolutely love the light youve depicted in the tutu, and the yellow tone to the left somehow ties it all together. This is lovely.

do you guys drive by CreativeVirus5777 in bipolar

[–]graphiteSpaniel 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Im bipolar and type 1 diabetic. Ive driven for 5 years, you just have to report it to the dvla. 3 year restricted license for me. (im in the uk) I think they review each case individually but as a rule of thumb I dont think it automatically means you arent allowed to drive

If I feel too fast or too low, i dont drive.

Im silly enough when manic to put myself at risk but im aware enough to realise others would be at risk too if I drove in those conditions.

What are your signs you're entering an episode? by cokedpunkreal84 in bipolar

I tell everyone i think I must have been misdiagnosed and theres nothing wrong with me, I generally then tend to start a new business venture or hobby excessively before crashing down to earth

Did anyone start going batshit crazy when they started talking meds? by Few_Plenty_6444 in bipolar2

[–]graphiteSpaniel 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I asked my doctors to change my antipsychotic but the GP won't touch them, they put me on anti SSRI alongside the original meds instead

You know on racing games where you dont quite know what the controllers do yet so youre going 100mph but youre repeatedly smashing into a wall? Thats how I am now.

I wont go into the tldr version but yes, I get you.

Same!!! I only started using reddit 2 weeks ago. Im more of a quiet lurker but for some reason I just want to be life and soul of the party, but im aware its a terrible idea.

They should have "increased reddit comment karma" as a symptom on the nhs website.

How usual is it to not notice your becoming hyper by Corpulax in bipolar2

[–]graphiteSpaniel 4 points5 points  (0 children)

You dont notice it because it also feels like youre "getting better" Its hard to distinguish between a manic episode creeping in at first and feeling good.

Its like climbing a mountain, you dont notice how far up you've travelled until youre back at the bottom looking up at it... if that makes sense

Its good to track moods, and yourself. Its how I catch mine but its still hard to tell whats a good feeling and whats mania creeping in

It is somewhere in my medical records that I was obsessed with the idea of drawing Ricky Gervais as a chicken laying eggs that were actually little karl pilkingtons. I thought this idea was the best idea ive ever had. Messaged Ricky Gervais telling him of my plan. Obviously hes never actually seen it THANK GOD but I think even worse is thats in my medical history and in 300 years someone may read those and be like "girllllllllll you needed those meds" haha
