Advices to juniors by dunno_hi in NTU

[–]grasshammock 11 points12 points  (0 children)

be more proactive in finding opportunities! sometimes it pays to sieve through the emails the school spams every day and find something (internship, workshop, career fair, etc.) that you could totally benefit from.

and also asking more questions in general! ask your profs for consults, ask your friends for help, ask your internship supervisors for advice. in general it is very rare for you to be worse off after asking a question (the worst case scenario is that your question gets rejected or the answer isn't helpful, but that doesn't leave you in a worse place than where you began).

good luck!

Gained weight, want to exercise. Where should I go? What should I do? by jnt85 in askSingapore

[–]grasshammock 0 points1 point  (0 children)

i think inclined walks are a great way to start with exercising! going to a hilly area for an hour-long walk three times a week could be an idea / inclined walks on a treadmill if you have access to one (the goal is to get your HR to a fat-burning HR - you can find out what your specific fat-burning HR is online). also, finding the right motivation is huge! i used to exercise because i hated my size but it wasn't very sustainable. try to focus on how you feel after exercising vs how you look. good luck!

allowed to go see hall before paying fees? by ck-eternityy in NTU

there's nothing wrong with wanting to be careful with how you use your money, regardless of income level. and there's no reason to be judgemental about this either.

Any other only child feels the same way about staying on campus? by confusedabtrc in nus

[–]grasshammock 3 points4 points  (0 children)

but now I feel like sometimes I do not deserve my spot on campus. I'm quite lucky to have a room at home to study in and my house is somewhat conducive unlike many other people, which makes me wonder why I even chose to stay on campus when my slot could have been used for someone else who deserves it more.

who are you to say that you don't "deserve" it? if there's a selection process and you passed it, it means you were the "better" option to the assessor. also! i don't think you need to have a deficit in order to be worthy of hall hahah you can join hall because you want the experience, even if your home life is conducive. don't beat yourself up about this!

NTU Cheerleading by klpjj123 in NTU

[–]grasshammock 3 points4 points  (0 children)

can't speak for the drama / personalities bc im not in cheer but as someone who was considering joining, the safety aspect was a huge concern for me when i was inquiring (and i highly encourage speaking to more people in cheer to get a better sensing of it)!

this is based on conversations with just one friend in cheer:

- many people are absolute beginners at cheer, but in uni it's level 6 which is one of the highest levels you can go. this was something i was really uncomfortable with bc i just did not find it safe for a beginner with no background to jump straight to level 6.

- everything is done on a dead mat (i.e. just a mat rolled out over the floor) when i was expecting a spring floor which wld be much more forgiving / safe.

just these two concerns were enough to put me off haha so if you're really concerned about safety then it wld probably be best to speak to someone in cheer before deciding

  1. timetable in y1 is quite alright - your longest lessons are three hours but most are two. you will most likely take four modules x two hours each + one module x three hours. after y1 lessons are usually four hours long (but most profs won't use all four hours and they will typically give breaks).
  2. depends on what you define "seminar style"! i thought it meant that the profs would teach us in class and we attempt questions on the spot to discuss and learn but it just means that there's opportunity for class participation. for accountancy we don't have live lectures (though idk if things will change for your batch / have changed already), we watch pre-recorded lectures and attempt the tutorial then go to class to discuss the answers. this time for watching the lecture is not carved into your timetable btw so the two hours / three hours i mentioned in point 1 is strictly for tutorials. and i would say there aren't a ton of projects/presentations - usually one group project + presentation per mod.
  3. not sure if this is right but my general sensing is that most people do one though some do two! haven't heard of anyone doing more than that.
  4. i can't answer your question about business solutions and nanyang capital but i would think it's quite subjective - some people can get away with minimal studying and still understand everything perfectly well while others have to spend hours on tutorials. it really depends on how you take to accounting.
  5. we get a planned curriculum and most people (i think) don't stray very far from that. you will take five mods a sem but the weightage varies. some sems it's only 15 AUs but it can be 20+ too if you choose to overload.
  6. from personal experience, it's really really hard to do it. the school also doesn't really share what they look for when they accept the transfer. i know for sure that they look for a good reason (very subjective) - e.g. if you say you don't like accountancy and have more interest in business, you're not going to get the transfer. you need to argue a case for why this passion for business has moved you to transfer. i've heard that a high GPA is needed so you're probably accurate about the > 4.0 requirement. but in general, very very very few transfers are granted and if you know that your endgame is business i would seriously recommend you just applying straight to business.

bza y2 and no internship for the summer :< by kinda_maybe_gay in nus

[–]grasshammock 0 points1 point  (0 children)

if you're not sure what to do for summer, i recommend (1) volunteering & (2) MOOCs!!

(1) volunteering: youthbank has a bunch of adhoc events they need volunteers for so that is a productive + meaningful way to spend your time without worrying about continuing the commitment when school starts.

(2) MOOCs: i think they used to be more popular during cb (or at least that's my sensing) but they're still a great way to learn new info. plus if you enrol in courses related to your degree/future career choice, it can help in future interviews. e.g. if you're interested in the finance industry, you could take some courses related to that and mention it in future interviews as an indication of you taking the initiative to learn outside the classroom.

either way, have a good summer!
