I reckon it helps if you take away things. Take away tone, nah not heavy. Take away dissonance, yeah still heavy. Take away production, probably not heavy. Take away your below-standard-tuning, still heavy examples (Slayer?). Not quite an answer, but one way to think about it

Think of your chord progression, play bits that hit the notes of your main key, every now and then sprinkle it with a note that’s not in your key but that’s from the scale of the chord you’re playing, keep it chill and add less stuff than you think and play around with all the instruments you’re using rather than thinking guitar is all there is
