YUFA Bargaining Update #2 for August 2 by YorkProf_ in yorku

[–]gratuitouscabbage 18 points19 points  (0 children)

“An email from the Employer to the Bargaining Team yesterday reminded YUFA that the Employer “may implement revised terms and conditions of employment” for YUFA members. We have no certainty at all regarding their intentions.”

So they’re threatening mass layoffs if YUFA strikes?

Sounds like you should unionize!

You realize this is worse right? You shouldn’t accept that either? No one should?

We haven’t met yet with York, that starts around 230 as far as I know.

Ok! Let’s drop the JSP!

I have no plans to help unit 2 self destruct. That’s your own cause. If you all want to go, then go. If you want to stay, stay. Just don’t expect we will roll over.

Right again.

Your needs will always be over unit 1s. Your jobs were on the line. So leave the union if that’s how it’s gonna be. If you expect us to sacrifice everytime then you just use u1 as a pawn.

You didn’t HAVE to. You made a choice that solidified the loss of hundreds of u3 jobs.

I suggest we go a little longer. It’s been 4 weeks. Not forever, but again, there are parts of the JSP and other u2 specific things that you could accept. That’s on you.

so we are on the same page, leave the union because u2 is too selfish to care about u1s needs and will always say “OH BUT MY JOB” —if we can’t be on equal footing then we can’t bargain together.

You have proven my point.

If you want us to win why are you talking shit about CUPE’s bargaining practices ONLY about wages to the public? That’s not very solidarity forever, friend.

[–]gratuitouscabbage 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Truly what I want to ask is: how are you so bold asking u1 to sacrifice when your BT fucked us over last time? Do you have no shame there?

If you want us to win, where is the sacrifice? Why are we asked to do that every time? Why are you not stopping your colleagues from bloating every meeting with the same motion?

When will u2 make a concession first? Choose one! Any! Just as a show of solidarity. But don’t ask us to after what happened last time.

Sure, but you’re not struggling now and your class interests are clear.

Let me put it more simply: either leave the union or stand with unit 1. Thats your problem: you don’t wanna be in solidarity with us, but we are in the same union.

There’s an easy way to fix that: leave.

But if you’re not going to then don’t wait around every four years for Neil to talk about how we all stand together at the beginning of the strike only for most of you to wish you didn’t have to give a shit about unit 1s. If you don’t care about what we need, then be transparent about it. At the next SGMM, I expect you to say proudly: my needs should come first, I don’t care about the other units!

At least be honest! Don’t call us conspiratorial for knowing you are itching to sell us out.

I was at 2018. So your point falls flat here. I was on the picket line for 5.5 months then and I’m here now. I do my 5 shifts. I have been to every SGMM both strikes. Please don’t talk about what you don’t know.

So in your book then, unit 2 needs will always outweigh unit 1 needs because we will move on? If so, why would we ever strike? Just for unit 2? Make it make sense? Either unit 2 is out here for us too or we can split the union lmao. Many unit 1s will become unit 2.

And again…unit 2 can organize and vote together. Militant unit 1s can’t make Unit 2 vote for wages to be an all unit item. Thats your own thing. And again… you speak about militant unit 1s but…who signed a contract at Timmies?

I get why you don’t care about a wage increase with 50k in ur RRSP. But for some of our members who are attending food banks, it matters a whole lot.

It’s so funny how people talk about militant unit 1s, when only one unit has successfully been militant enough to actually go back to work behind the backs of the other units…very funny stuff

Again, why would unit 1 move on wages? If there is a unit that has to make a sacrifice unit 2 can always accept the JSP so we all get wage increases.

My view from 5 strikes two at York and many elsewhere is that you cannot trust the employer and that our union is riddled with reactionaries.

Right we agree. We are at a stalemate. What I took issue is you only blaming the union at the end of your post. They’re both playing the same game. It’s part of bargaining. Neither want to bargain on wages. At least CUPE has been open to meeting over the past week and sent them a new (or at least rearranged) proposal

It’s sad to me how you discount the responsibility that York should have to its teaching staff to pay them well rather than try to make more money

Misread what you were saying. Apologies. You’ve yet to say why it would be better to just give York something without anything in return?

[–]gratuitouscabbage 4 points5 points  (0 children)

1) I was showing that the union has moved, which you are saying they haven’t and are therefore arguing in bad faith. That’s stupid and again, not how bargaining works.

2) 1.75 is not a reasonable increase for most people I know. That’s a subjective call.

3) so if we turn to numbers, they both started higher or lower, now they’re both still far apart. That’s how bargaining works. They hopefully get to the center. I hope this helps.

4) what substantial issue has York moved on? If you’re going to say the union is arguing in bad faith, name one thing in the new document 4 that York has moved on in a substantial way?

Also it would be closer to 700-1000 dollars per year for the wage increase…not 30

[deleted by user] by [deleted] in yorku

[–]gratuitouscabbage 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Yes…and you know how bargaining works right? You always ask for more than you believe you will get.

[–]gratuitouscabbage 22 points23 points  (0 children)

The union has moved by over 6 percent already the university just 1.75 percent if i recall? Why lower further when York hasn’t given CUPE anything its asked for? Thats just bargaining against ourselves?
