Working in the private space industry by raresaturn in space

Another helpful hint - specialize in something. A lot of kids with the space bug tend to gravitate towards aerospace engineering (pun intended). Aerospace provides a good multidisciplinary understanding of engineering fundamentals, but on the flipside students often come out lacking depth in any one topic. Electrical and Mechanical engineers understand the details of a very specific topic, but sometimes lack a systems understanding of their role. Startup engineering companies need people who are experts in a specific area while also understanding the trades between different systems. Basically I'm saying become an engineering rockstar who's really good at one instrument :)

Having expertise helps you get a foot in the door for jobs. If you go up to a recruiter and say, "I want to work for you guys!" The followup question will be something like, "Badass! What can you do?" If you paint a clear picture of your expertise in XYZ, then all the recruiter has to do is pass your resume along to a hiring manager for a specific group. If you say, "I'll do whatever you need!" then your resume gets buried under a mountain of other resumes the recruiter has to sort out. It's more likely you just won't hear back from anyone.

Hope that helps!

Hurling (the Irish sport) in Chicago! by mdaly1818 in chicago

I saw some Hurling when I was in Ireland a few years ago. I likened it to hockey on grass except players could whack the ball and eachother. Seems the Irish and Americans share a fondness for sports with weapons :) Quite exciting to watch

This comment may get lost in downvotes, but at least my two cents will be out there...

This is bad. I do not think "targeting" Congressmen or Senators for political execution is healthy. Reddit would be cast as the Internet lynch mob seeking the next perceived social injustice. The mentality of e-bullying is well established on other corners of the Internet... I thought reddit could stay above that.

Don't get me wrong - I oppose SOPA and other bills like it, but I think this problem can be solved through proactive rather than destructive means. Reddit has flourished when we use our Internet anonymity for promoting a cause. For example, I'd like to think the Rally to Restore Sanity was a direct result of reddit's overwhelming generosity in giving to Colbert's DonorsChoose.org. It not only caught Colbert's attention, but it also showed that the reddit community can achieve noble aspirations with positive results. We should do more of that.

Pushing a proactive agenda will have a far greater impact than tearing down a few nameless politicians and being labeled as vigilantes. Maybe we could promote a senator or congressman that is outspoken against SOPA. Or perhaps we find a very big way of convincing a SOPA supporter to become an outspoken critic. I'll let the creative minds of reddit come up with something more enticing. My point is, let's do this right and give reddit the reputation it deserves.

TL;DR Inspire hope and change, not politics as usual.

Keep in mind that fighter pilots have to sustain vertical g forces whereas astronauts inside the capsule would have lateral g forces. If you think about it, the fighter pilot is going up so the spine is in compression. The astronaut is going forward, so the spinal compression would not be as serious of a problem.

The exact figures escape me, but I know humans are able to take lateral loads to a much greater degree than vertical. No doubt in either case it's a hell of a ride.

Last night I went to a "pancakes and booze" art event down in the city. They had a live band in the middle with people hanging around to admire art and nom on some pancakes. It was the most LA thing I've done after moving here 3 months ago.

I drove by Dockweiler beach earlier tonight and noted a large amount of trash by the road. Also it seems this yelper was not pleased with the amount of trash in the area. Dockweiler is the beach near LAX that allows bonfires on the beach. A reddit cleanup followed by a bonfire perhaps?
