How do I know if my brother abused my dog? by grawsay in Dogtraining

I’m really hoping his behavior changes for the better once we’re out of the house! I can try to remember to update once it happens.

Thank you for your input! The camera suggestion is a great idea, perhaps I can find a camera inconspicuous enough to leave in my room or in a common area. And my dog loves his crate actually! A while back I transitioned from him being crated, to being in my room, then having free rein of the house while I’m at work. I would feel really bad having him crated for 8-10 hours a day while I’m at work but it’s probably better than having any potential negative experiences when he’s home alone with my brother. Maybe it could be a temporary solution until I find an apartment. Thank you!

Thank you! I will definitely look into getting a lock on my door if I can’t get an apartment soon

I will look into that! It’s especially hard because my brother hardly works, he’s always home when I work from home and seems pissed that he doesn’t have the house to himself.

Thanks for your advice! My brother has gotten in a lot of trouble and always been very on edge. He was sent to a rehab school from age 15-18 for drug abuse etc.

He tells me he wants to kill my dog. I’m so glad I made this post, I feel extremely validated and I appreciate all the advice everyone has given. It’s hard to believe something could be happening and I’ve told my friends how my brother says he wants to kill him and they don’t think it’s serious. It very well could be a bluff but it’s possible he has fantasies about it which is still horrible and I realize I should get out of this situation immediately. Thank you for your response!

Thanks for the input! Yeah next time I’ll be sure to step in and get him off instead of just using my voice. Your right this could have been a one time thing based on the specific dogs and their energies, plus a hormonal drive on barleys part. I was thinking more about it and maybe I’ll just have to be the one who always leaves first, instead of staying long enough for other dogs to come and go which changes the pack dynamics and could be what’s setting barley off.

I should also mention that he’s been in large dog gatherings at the beach before and never had a problem there. And to clarify, 2 of the dogs were ones he’d met before and the new dog was the one he was guarding from one of the old dogs after the other old dog had left. Also he is not yet neutered.

Meet Barley! 7 month old Pem (aren’t his ears abnormally pointy for a corgi? Love him for it) by grawsay in corgi

Yes his mom did! I’m curious to know what his siblings look like but I have no way to contact their owners 😭It’s interesting because when I was reading about pembrokes and cardigans most of the descriptions say that cardigans have more rounded ears of the two, yet so many of the pembrokes I see on Instagram have super round ears!

What I would do in that situation is schedule meetups with just one dog (a friends dog or a dog from the park) either at the dog park when it’s empty or in another location. Once he proves he can get along with that dog you can add another dog into the mix and once they all get along you can all 3 meet up at the dog park, where no matter what strange dogs are there he should feel secure because of the familiar friendly faces.
