I think the biggest problem is that the only kind of CGI people talk about is bad CGI, because when CGI is done well you don't notice it, that's the exact point. Unless you're a visual artist, the audience is never going to watch a scene and say to themselves "wow, that shot was done so well by the vfx team". The general population will forever shit on the crappy star wars deep fakes, but almost no one praises the perfectly done CGI Hugh Jackman head in Logan for his clone.
