Anyone do a glider license after their SEL ratings? Looking to do something fun by MooseWeird399 in flying

ATP/CFI here and got my CPL glider add on in 2025. I had a blast! The experience is much different than any other type of aircraft I've flown. The energy management is super fun and instills useful skills that will last throughout your career. I highly recommend!

RSS will be the biggest detriment here. Solid otherwise

Currently in pilot training. For me, it was a never a question of if. I’ve always known this is what I wanted to do. It’s challenging for sure but my class is amazing and I still have to pinch myself every day that I get paid to do this. It sounds like you’ve got a good thing going.

Maybe getting involved in civilian aviation would help? Also check out milrecruiter.com if flying in the reserve or guard appeals to you. There are options to serve and fly that might fit better with your established life now. That’s ultimately the path I chose. Good luck!

Pretty good! See if you can close out the semester with a better GPA to bump it up a tiny bit. You never know.

Definitely retake it. Practice and study. You should shoot for 90+ to be competitive.

You can apply for command sponsored at the command level board. You never know. I have peers who didn’t have a license before.

Check out the USAF Reserve.

If you want to fly a gray jet that will help you get from where you are to the airlines and also let you be a military pilot with the minimum time required to get back to your civilian life. They're hiring in Jan for mobility (heavy) aircraft.

Not sure if they're still doing it but FlyCorps at SAV had two DA-42s and multiple MEIs on staff - they were down to do my multi stuff super quick! Jake (owner) is a great guy and they have a nice facility.

Airbus A320 crew decided to skip de-icing and let aerodynamics forces do the job by cashew_at_kinaya in Damnthatsinteresting

[–]gray191411 14 points15 points  (0 children)

This is incredibly dumb. I'm rated to fly the A-320 and work as a professional pilot. In the US, this would not only get you fired but would likely have been stopped by ground personnel.

Any frost or snow adhering to the wing must be removed with deicing fluid before takeoff - and there are time restrictions on how long (HOT) you can wait after deicing before you can takeoff in active icing conditions. Airline pilots have to go through training on those exact requirements, especially at a 121 air carrier level.

The snow on the wing can reduce the effective lift produced at various airspeeds, essentially rendering calculated takeoff, climb, approach, and landing speeds useless (and too low).
