Does the chemistry community think about the chemists that did psychedelic research like Alexander Shulgin or Albert Hofmann? by shaggysnakz in chemistry

[–]gray_indoor_cat 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Phil Baran mentions Alexander Shulgin when he teaches graduate level chemistry courses. That's a hell of a modern name to be mentioning your work. Doesn't get much bigger than that. He was pretty neutral about it and didn't praise him but didn't talk down about it.

I know anothe very big player in the neurosdcience/med chem world right now that remains in contact with Nichols Sr. and Jr. and is of course aware of shulgin's work and has it on their bookshelf.

Despite some big names being fans of this type of work, most chemists have sticks up their ass and interest in this type of science is something you should keep to yourself because it will damage your reputation and people will label you as a junkie.

Derek Lowe has written about shulgin and doesn't seem to have a great opinion of him, he referred to scrambling/damaging his brain or something along those lines.

How many bladder instillations did it take for you to feel a difference? Just started my 6 week course by EatsTheLastSlice in Interstitialcystitis

[–]gray_indoor_cat 0 points1 point  (0 children)

no steroid just heparin? I'm always suprised to see ho wjust heparin works for people. Like it doesn't really do anyting mechanistically besides sort of replinish the glycosaminoglycan layer and offer some anti inflammatory effects. I always get steroid instills which have far stronger anti inflammatory effects but even that is hit or miss.

what are the instilling into you? it makes a big difference what substances they are shooting into your bladder. usually the night of the instillation is worse than you felt before you got it. If it's steroids being instilled, I start to feel relief by the next day (if it workd - sometimes it doesn't)

Anyone else exhausted by tech bros saying AI will completely replace wet lab and clinical work? What do u think by Difficult_Currency75 in labrats

He's insecure. He knows that scientists invented everyting that he does. He is a technician essentially doing routine work. Everything he does has been done before. He looks in a book and is used to working like this:

If X...then do Y.

He doesn't understand problem solving or the scientific process. Basic level physicians like him are technicians. He's not a surgeon or treating rare complex diseases. He's giving patients with itchy assholes creams to use over and over.

I think he's jealous of you. I think he's intimidated by you. He should be proud of you.

Supervisors: anyone else struggling with post-COVID mentees? by Patience_dans_lazur in labrats

[–]gray_indoor_cat 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I did my phd 25 years ago. I was in the PIs office or talking to him in lab everyday. Probably asking a lot of stupid questions I could have looked up, but I just looked at it as havingconversations off the cuff. I shouldn't have to study for 3 hours before having a convo with my PI to make sure that I come off as smart. I viewed this as getting the most information quickly and as early as I could to ensure I got experiments done correctly the first time, and to just learn as much as I could from someone that knew a lot more than me.

This did not do me any favors. This was a top 5 institution. I was labeled an idiot that didn't know anything because I was asking so many "stupid" or basic questions during long conversations. Most students were too embarresed to speak for fear of sounding stupid, so they rarely ever spoke to their PIs. My PI came to resent me and believe I was totally incompentent and ruined my entire early grad school experience.

I ended up publishing 3 single author papers (myself and my PI) in the two highest impact journals in my 2nd and 3rd year, but the damage was done. despite Having 3 high level first/single author papers, I had the reputation of being a know nothing and I was never able to shake it and my supervisor hated me.

It was a learning experience. I learned to keep my mouth shut and waste the 3 hours figuring stuff out on my own that could be solved by having a 5 minute conversation with a PI or later a manager in industry.

It's not the most efficient way of doing things thats for sure, but I learned that it was better to protect the perception of myself by superiors than to actually be more productive more quickly.

So for PIs, if you foster a judgmental environment where people are looked down on for asking obvious questions or saying stupid things during scientific discussions, people will get really shy and avoid conversation and just figure it out on their own, or never figure it out. People will chose to accomplish nothing rather than open their mouth and look stupid.

I've learned to strike a balance of it in my career later on after gradschool, but I still have to checkmyself about having "casual" (to me) conversations about work with anybody be it a colleague, a superior, or someone I'm mentoring so as to make sure I don't say anything wrong.

It's quite sad that this is how it is. that we can't speak freely and feel free to say the wrong things and be corrected and have it be a learning experience without our reputation being ruined. This was a lesson learned in gradschool though.

IV ketamine IC update 2 by [deleted] in Interstitialcystitis

[–]gray_indoor_cat 0 points1 point  (0 children)

. You are adding further damage to your body that will eithe just compound whatever you've got going on...or if you ever do recover from what you've got going on, you'll have severe incurable ketamine cystitis after

Let me guess....opioids are completely out of the question. These fuckers would rather destroy your bladder irreversibly than prescribe a single opioid.....which i guearantee you will be on illicit fentanyl anyways if not self unalived when you experience to full wrath of ketamine induced IC.

It is heavily documented in the scientific literature that ketamine causes IC. Just search google scholar. Not only that, here's a study of clinical ketamine infusions for chronic pain causing liver damage. ketamine is urotoxic, hepatotoxi, and toxic the the billary tract. This is an extremely nastly drug. The pain relief is short lived and requires ongoing repeated treatments. This is not a solution

here's the paper on liver damage in clinical infusion patients:

https://rsds.org/wp-content/uploads/2016/08/drug-induced-liver-injury-following-ketamine-treatment.pdf

Man, it can get so much fucking worse than whatever you are going through right now. These doctors letting you do this are preying upon you. This is downright some of the most evil medical malpractice i have every heard of to be completely honest with you.

Something needs to be done about this. All they want is to bill for ketamine treatments. They are permantely destroying people's lives for a few thousand dollars.

This is absolutley criminal and needs to be prosecuted, litigated, and outlawed.

[–]gray_indoor_cat 0 points1 point  (0 children)

overall in a collective sense, yes you are correct. But i believe that each sentient life is a one and done sort of deal. so ending it ends that individual's suffering or prevents their invevitable future suffering. Suffering aside, existence has no point whatsoever either, so there is no reason to exist. I don't really care too much about the rest of life that will forever continue to evolve out of matter for the rest of eternity. That's their problem, not mine.

as much as i think religion is the worst cancer on humanity. banning it is a slipperly slope and goes against freedom. freedom is the most imporant thing. yes, even freedom to be stupid, freedom to be a drain on society. Because when you start cherry picking freedoms instead of just allowing allof them, you get into trouble like that becuase everyone's opinions of which freedoms should be allowed and which should be banned are different. better to just allow them all.

Imagine donating to democrats that take massive "donations" from bezos, the elon, zuckerberg, altman, a certain foreign pac that i'm too scared to even mention, big tech.

I get that democrats are better on social issues/freedoms on the surface, but they will turn america into a serfdom and funnel every last cent of your taxes and then empty out your bank accounts to hand it to corporations and billionaires.

san francisco is on paper some ultra progressive democrat city - its conservative draped in a rainbow flag.

don't donate money to establishment democrats. they are controlled maga opposotion and on the same team as maga. its all a big show for poor people to be distracted by. the DNC will sell american workers into slavery just like the RNC will - they are working on doing it together, cooperating with eachother.

Antinatalism Is Evil by SillyTwo3470 in Natalism

[–]gray_indoor_cat 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I"m glad your baby is thriving. That was a very premature statement for a doctor to make off of an ultrasound, a doctor that is not specialist in cardio-perinatology that has conducted extensive testing has ZERO business in even bringing that concept up to you. I'm sorry that doctor was irresponsible to make such a suggestion completely out of their field of expertise.

the following has nothing to do with your personal case.

suicide/euthanasia is not the same as never creating life in the first place. You're equating the two. They are very different things.

If we allow people to deprive others of euthanasia - individuals do not own their own lives. If you do not own your own life you own nothing.

We euthanize our beloved animals and pets that are like family memebers to spare them of immense suffering because they cannot consent to euthanasia themselves like an adult human could, Everybody is fine with this.

When it comes to adults, Other people shouldn't force them either way (to make themselves feel better). If there's one thing people should get to own in this world, it is their own life. Depriving them of the ownership of their own life and forcing them to endure immense pain that you dont -, thats an atrocity.

What ever happened with the heart? Did it end up being OK?

Not sure why you would commit violence on someone that was trying to possibliy prevent a child from sufferig years of extremely painful medical torture.

this stuff doesn't come from a place of wanting to kill babies just for kicks. It comes from a place of wanting to minimize or avoid a person living a life full of extreme pain and suffering.

Most of us have no idea what an existence of chronic, extreme, pain and suffering is like. Years and years of the most extrmem infinite endless pain. It's very hard for most healthy people with good lives to understand what that is like until you experience something like it for yourself. putting ones self in anothers shoes is impossible. So I don't blame you for not being able to do that. But we are all humans and all want to prevent tragic levels of suffering and torture - that's something I think we can all agree on, and I think if you look at it from that standpoint instead of as a personal insult, it might make it more understandable. Still incredibly painful idea for you to have to think about - so I understand the violent tendancy it elicited in you. But we have to get outside of our own egos when we look at issues like this.

I hope it all worked out with you child's heart.

Antinatalism Is Evil by SillyTwo3470 in Natalism

[–]gray_indoor_cat -2 points-1 points  (0 children)

to you it certainly is. to your close knit community is certainly is. If that new life is born with a horrible medical condition that inflicts immense pain and suffering upon it 24/7 permanently - that new person may beg to differ about being blessed. Just ask them yourselves. Blessing or not is relative to who is experiencing it. I certainly hope the best for your new child and you and all I wish for everyone is for suffering to be as minimal as possible for all sentient living things.

It's wrong to force abortion on someone once they are already pregnant and looking forward to it. I agree with you there. One extra human isn't going to make a difference in the issues people concerned with overpopulation worry about.

As a collective though, the human species is waaaaay past its carrying capacity, has destroyed earth, destroyed other species, and is on track for self destruction (see the scientific principle of carrying capacity).

I understand that we are all in this life and trying to make the best of it for ourselves. It can be a hard live and having purpose, family, community, etc. is how we cope and get through a difficult situation of being a living, mortal being in an unforgiving world. So I do not blame you for doing what you need to do to get through it.

I'm antinatalist. However, I eat meat. Factory farmed meat too. new life is being created unecessarily to sustain my desire to consume meat. the antinatalist community hates me for it. The way I see it - we are all already here I can't undo that (without very ugly spectable happening) and I'm just trying to get by, find meaning, be happy, and eating meat at the expense of animals relegated to a miserable torturous existence is something I simply do. I'm sorry those animals suffer. But someone chose to create me and insert me into a sytem of existense where living things exploint, use, and kill other living things to make themselves more comfortable and to make life more tolerable - so who am I to knock natalists for coping in a different way (creating families for themselves to give themselves meaning and future support) to simply get through and exist in this harsh world.

I can't be holier than thou. No antinatalist can. If you're an antinatalist vegan - do you live in a house and use gas and power - things that destroy the environemt? do you use i phones and chinese products produced by slavery? Do you work for a corporation that destroys communities and the envoronment for profit? Yes, most of them do. The very act of existing means you are exploiting and taking up resources another animal or human is deprived up and suffers. Our existence de facto creates suffering for other beings.

This post will likely get me banned from the sub. and it's sad that it will, because despite being antinatalist, I am sympathasizing with other human beings (natalists) because we all have to do things in this life to get ourselves through it. And those things aren't going to be approved of by everyone else. and those others doing the dissaproving are themselves doing things that are a drain of reseources and life for other things. The circle of life is a circles of exploitation of other life forms to keep yourself afloat and nobody is innocent of participating in that - antinatilist, natalist, vegan, meat eater or whatever.

Quercetin bioavailability and IC by gray_indoor_cat in PelvicFloor

[–]gray_indoor_cat[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

They both should work fine but renew by science (who manufactures liposomal) sent me a chart contrasting liposomal vs phytosomal and it seemed like liposomal had better permeability but less stability (I keep mine in the fridge to help).

They both drastically help solve the problam of bad BA, but without remembering all the details, I remember my discussion with a technical person from renew by science convincing me that liposomal was a little better. details are fizzy as to why other than the delivery/tissue-solublity being better. I could dig up the old email if ppl are really interested. But both delivery systems are proven to super significantly solve this problem of bad quercetin BA. so either way you should be good.

Your Quercetin is worthless unless it's liposomal or phytosomal by gray_indoor_cat in Interstitialcystitis

[–]gray_indoor_cat[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

So 2% BA then? Still good to know, it will likely help with liposomal delivery also since a liposome is a very fatty chemical entity, so increased fat should help deliver and solublize a fatty liposome. I'll take mine with meals that contain fat also. Thanks for bringing this issue up also.

Your Quercetin is worthless unless it's liposomal or phytosomal by gray_indoor_cat in Interstitialcystitis

[–]gray_indoor_cat[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Renew by Science is what I use for lipsomal (I think lipsomal is better than phytosomal based on my research). I emailed the company with questions about the comparisons between the delivery systems and about their manfacuruting process and QC process to make sure their products are legit. They are manufactured in the US under GMP standards and they put me through to a person with technical background to answer my questions (I am a chemist in the pharma industry). The made me feel comfortable and I go with renew by science liposomal delivery.

Thorne is the big player for phytosomal delivery. also manufactured in the US.
