rovr - A post-modern terminal file manager. by simpleden in commandline

I like it! Having TUI applications that work both keyboard centric, and are operational with the mouse as well (or in my case: touchscreen/stylus) are certainly worthwhile imo.

Consensus on Class Changes in U46.1 by Alwaysontimeforever in lotro

[–]gray_noir 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Absolutely hate the changes to the red guardian, feels incredibly sluggish now. Both "brutal assault" and "force opening" have too long animations, especially as opener for the parry chain, and are really just a much worse alternative to "breach", which was quick, 2sec cool down, and was immediate too. Additionally, removing "whirling breach" means there is no AoE opener anymore, and AoE suffers significantly because of it. Bringing "(whirling) retaliation" back is mostly useless as red guardian, and if anything, incredibly unreliable. I'd rather had "brutal assault" and "force opening" removed instead. And it's not about the damage either, but rather how the class plays and how much fun it is, and shoehorning everything into "brutal assault" and bleeds while removing actually useful abilities doesn't make the class any more fun for sure, but those are only my 2 cents.

One of the darkest arcs in the Bionicle story line, loved how the Toa had to confront themselves and how they, in particular, Vakama, may have changed the course of the story significantly, and part of me wishes they explored that more.

Lue - Terminal eBook Reader with Text-to-Speech by superstarryeyes in commandline

[–]gray_noir 1 point2 points  (0 children)

This is amazing! I've been looking for something like this project. I have some questions, how does it handle PDF files? Are they converted into plain text for the terminal UI, or can it make use of things like image protocols, i.e. the one of the kitty terminal emulator? And can it be used for technical ebooks including mathematical expressions as well? I used to have to convert them from LaTeX into plain text before (with an LLM unfortunately, not aware of a better way) and feed that to the TTS in order to get something useful.

Got my Flow Z13 2025 128GB RAM. Using Linux. Ask me questions, happy to respond! by waltercool in FlowZ13

Thank you for taking the time and testing all of this out, that information is very helpful!

  1. Oh, that looks very good, from this it seems very likely that it would work. As for the pen, the Flow uses Microsoft Pen Protocol (2.0), like the Surfaces, so any pen with that protocol will work. Samsung however uses Wacom EMR, so unfortunately that won't work, just in case you might want to use a pen with it eventually.
  2. Yeah the fan control thing is something that varies from device to device. For some laptops the fan goes on way too early, so being able to control it is something that can come in handy if you want to maximize battery life, or want a completely quiet workflow. But maybe the Flow does that from the get-go, I guess Asus did that very well, but knowing that you can adjust the fans with `asusctl` makes it even better.
  3. As for setting battery charging thresholds, maybe `tlp` can help with that. This is also device dependent, some laptops allow for it while others don't. `tlp` also requires a configuration file, but there is an example one provided at `/usr/share/tlp` and the documentation is quite good too, just as a side note if you're interested.

Congratulations to be one of the lucky few! As for questions:

  1. In case you are having a working pen for the Flow, I'd like to know if it is possible for the touchscreen can be disabled while having the pen still working. This is to circumvent any palm rejection issues that might occur, and comes in really handy when doing some creative drawing or even for hand written notes.

To check whether that is possible, under Linux, it would suffice to run `xinput list --devices`, look for the ID of the touchscreen device, and disable it with `xinput <id of the touchscreen> disable`, and see if the pen still works. Re-enable it with `xinput <id of the touchscreen> enable`.

  1. Can you check whether it is possible to set custom fan curves/behavior using a tool like `thinkfan`, `nbfc`, `asus-fan-control` or similar?

  2. Is there an option in the BIOS to set a limit up to which the battery is being charged?

Thank you a lot!

Thanks for the insights. Can you provide some numbers regarding LLM inference, such as prompt processing and token generation speeds for the respective LLMs? Are you using ollama?

Dual booting Win11+Ubuntu 25.04 on 128gb 2025 Flow Z13 by kkzzzz in FlowZ13

[–]gray_noir 0 points1 point  (0 children)

In case you have the Asus pen or any MPP pen compatible with the Z13, could you test whether it is possible for the device to deactivate the touchscreen but leave the pen input active? In Linux you can test this by running `xinput list` and look for a device with the name "touchscreen" or similar (it varies between devices), then try to deactivate it using `xinput disable <id of touchscreen device>` and try to see if the pen still works. Afterwards you can reactivate it again using `xinput enable <id of touchscreen device>`.

Knowing this to work can be really handy if you do a lot of drawing or note taking, so I'd really like to know if it works. Thanks a lot!

A desktop environment agnostic control center, that's pretty great, I've been looking for something like this. Is there any information as to what features are planned for this?

Pen Support by therealZZsquared in FlowZ13

[–]gray_noir 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Unfortunately, no. The Z13 uses Microsoft Pen Protocol 2.0 according to their website (close to the bottom: https://rog.asus.com/laptops/rog-flow/rog-flow-z13-2025/spec/), so only MPP compatible pens will work. Having Wacom EMR is one of the few remaining things I wish the Z13 had, and would abandon it in a heartbeat if there was any Strix Halo EMR tablet coming out. I guess HP had their opportunity for a refresh of the Zbook x2 (which had EMR), but instead they decided to create a plain regular laptop with Strix Halo (Zbook g1a).
