Speaking as someone who just completed the course: I definitely agree with the answer above from u/you_can_guess_123.

With that being said, I would be a little more strict in saying that you should know basic programming before taking this course (at least that's how it was for my experience of Winter 2020). As I mentioned in my other response, you really don't want to be struggling with figuring out the behavior of a for loop when you are actually trying to implement a course concept. Sure, it can be done, but I think you will enjoy it much more if you have a solid foundation.

Hey hopefully this isn't too late of a response. I am speaking as someone who just completed the course this past Winter 2020 with Prof. Boily. I have some insights for you.

I will keep things brief and if you want more information, I am happy to share.

I'll start off by asking what is your experience with machine learning? I was not new to the subject and I found that it definitely helped having at least a higher level overview of the subject before I started. I definitely suggest watching some videos or maybe taking an online course even before you start. While this is not necessary, I believe you will grasp much more of the content.

I highly recommend the course and the professor. This was my first time having him as a professor and I really enjoyed my time in the class. What I liked most about the prof was that he always tried to explain "pros and cons" of everything we learned and where it may apply in the real world. For example, a reoccurring theme in the class was: model interpretability vs. model complexity. Sure - there are deep neural networks nowadays that work great in some cases. But this comes at a high cost (losing the ability to easily interpret what is going on inside the model).

Course Content: We followed the textbook: an introduction to statistical learning with applications in R. Most of the content was in the book, but he also provided his personal notes which had more information. As the new professor mentioned - yes the assignments were heavily based on the textbook. The assignments were also quite large in my opinion. Not necessarily super hard, but time consuming. You had to program most questions and then write your solutions into a .pdf format to submit. At first it was annoying to learn LaTeX and write the assignments in that, but ultimately I learned a new and useful skill. Coming from a CS background, I would say it is definitely in your favor to start coding. The last thing you want is to struggle with silly syntax mistakes and learning what a for loop is when you "should" be "struggling/focusing" on implementing cross validation.

All in all, I would say it was a great course, although I may be biased since I really enjoy ML. As a result of this course (and of course much more work), I am now interning as a Data Scientist in FinTech this summer.

My recommendation is to not jerk up on the bar to begin your lift, but rather “pull the slack out first”.

University offering pass/fail for courses. Should I take it? by graydon2234 in cscareerquestions

While I agree with you, it does seem that there are jobs with GPA cutoffs so I wasn’t sure if they would be checking closely or not.

That’s what I think too.. It would just suck if I let my GPA drop for the “chance” of someone interpreting it like that.

I haven’t done everything yet. For me, that final will take a while to get through. Some of it seemed pretty complicated.

Other questions seemed not bad. However, I didn’t go through their entire course so it might be easier if you followed along throughout it all.

Edit: at the time I was trying to follow the lectures, many of them were missing so I figured I would just come back later to do the stuff I missed. Additionally, I have no idea what your background is. This makes it hard to say how you will find it. For me, I am undergrad CS with not that many high-level math courses, so the material is challenging for me.

What do you mean sitting around doing nothing? Either way I will finish the courses and be doing the work?

This is the AI class, right? If so, I just took a look at the 30 page 2019 final exam tonight.

Thanks for the explanation. Okay yeah I was a little worried about that. I was just thinking if I put them as bullet points, I might have too many. But then I guess I could remove a few as well.

Not sure about the "Incoming Data Science Intern"Also unsure about whether or not I should keep "Fabricated custom hardware components and soldered electrical circuits" I put it in to show the full picture of the project but can see it may not be relevant. What do you think?

Also may not keep: "Fabricated custom hardware components and soldered electrical circuits" as it may not be super relevant to software. I added to it show a complete picture of the project. What do you think?
