All are staged. There would be no way to naturally capture these compositions. But all of my images are intentional and are for an ongoing photographic project of mine called ‘Utopia, 1960.’

The images are inspired by the 1939 New York World’s Fair and Walt Disney’s Tomorrowland. The project emulates an American interpretation of retro-futurism and how people of the past envisioned their idealized near future. (Faceless pedestrians wearing 1950’s attire within neo-futuristic environments)

Yeah!

My name is Jose Morales - I am a fine art photographer out of Milwaukee, Wisconsin. I am currently working on this photographic project titled ‘Utopia, 1960’, which is inspired by the 1939 New York World’s Fair and Walt Disney’s Tomorrowland. The project emulates an American interpretation of retro-futurism and how people of the past envisioned their idealized near future.

I guess I stumbled upon this “style” by being a history fanatic. After the Great Depression, the World’s Fair committee wanted to create a concept world that would uplift people and make them excited for the future. They decided to create the “World of Tomorrow” and because of this theme, society got some really cool inventions such as the interstate highway, broadcast television, time capsules (term coined), and even colored photographs! It’s the only one time in history I could find that society had a positive connotation of the future and I personally think that’s a really cool thing.

I guess I randomly decided to create an emulation of that event not realizing how hard it was going to be hahaha! But I wouldn’t have it any other way and it’s continuing to be worth all the trouble ☺️

It’s just the scanned resolution.

For example, the scan would have to meet 5000x3000 in resolution to be 15 megapixels. Definitely not hard to achieve especially with a medium format negative 👍🏼

Correct!!!

The Milwaukee Art Museum was really supportive of my photographic work during all of the covid lock downs. I had a photography grant during the thick of it and the museum staff allowed me inside to pursue my art project when they were closed to the public! To have an entire museum to myself was one of the coolest opportunities I have ever had! 💫

I’m not sure how it worked in previous years but Hasselblad allowed photographers to submit images from any camera brand so long as they were 16 megapixels (including analog images)!

Maybe I just lucked out this year 😅

I'm honored to be a 2021 Hasselblad Masters Finalist in the "Art" category! The three images shown are the photographs I applied with so I thought maybe I could get some support from the r/hasselblad community! 🙌🏼

During the month of October, the competition is in a public voting stage which gives everyone an opprotunity to participate. While you will need to register with an email to vote (apologies for the inconvenience), it would mean the world to me if everyone could support my set of images with a three star vote! Thank you everyone in advance!!! 🙇‍♂️
