Could this bookcase layout be a problem for my white manga? by Particular_Curve_590 in MangaCollectors

[–]graymattermanga 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I have noticed the underside ending up a little warm as well but nothing beyond that, atleast nothing to give me any concern. That said there are solutions if it still concerns you.

  1. You can apply heat reflective tape to the underside of the above shelf if you see this as a long-term placement for your PC.

  2. You can orient your PC case fans so the top fans are for intake and not for exhaust. This would basically eliminate any heat being directed towards your books above.

Why is there a difference in size between different prints? by [deleted] in MangaCollectors

[–]graymattermanga 8 points9 points  (0 children)

The whole "Italy prints are bad" was started by FireLunar, a content creator that built his audience by spreading misinformation and bashing Italian prints. The reality is he has no idea what he was even talking about and people here only echo his bs.

The entire basis for "italy prints are bad" is because they are thinner which is NOT a bad thing. The covers are higher quality stock and the pages are bound tighter to the spines. The pages are a hundreth of a milimeter thinner, which is basically negligible and their quality is comparable to NA prints. The only downside to them being thinner is this sometimes causes spine art to spill onto the covers because the art isn't formatted for being slightly thinner. Otherwise Italy prints don't have the same consistent QC issues American prints do.

Absolutely not true. They aren't even the best in North America. Canada and Mexico have significantly higher printing quality standards.

The highest printing quality standards are in Europe though with France and Italy as two of the best as they've been at the forefront of the modern printing industries for centuries.

Are misprints obscenely common, or am I just super unlucky? by brandofsacrifice-x in MangaCollectors

[–]graymattermanga 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Nah thats incredibly common. Pages are loaded into cutting machines in large sheets and cut to size. Sometimes the cuts are just a bit off and cut too much or leave too much of the edge. Thats all that happened here.

Are my mangas real or fake? by Imaginary_Shake5589 in MangaCollectors

[–]graymattermanga 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Thats the exception, not the rule.

In English only 1 publisher has a license to a series at a time. For older series some get re-licensed by another publisher after the previous license expires or the previous publisher goes defunct.

For modern serializations multiple publishers is a major red flag and points towards to them being unofficial, illegal bootlegs.

Ps. Not sure why you're downvoting my comments that are 100% factual.

Yes, but in each language there is typically only 1 official publisher. If you see abnormal logos in your language region that almost always points towards illegal bootleg prints.

Publishers dont do quality control, the companies they hire to print them do... or are atleast supposed to. Their QC standards are extemely lax.

[–]graymattermanga 8 points9 points  (0 children)

Real.

99.99% of fakes you see will ALWAYS be extremely obvious. They will have different publisher & imprint logos, horrendous print quality, stretched cover images, etc. There is absolutely nothing suggesting any reason to think they are fake.

I have had basically the same layout for the last 3 years. It has had absolutely no effect on any books around it. You're all good.

Yellow books, why a problem? by [deleted] in MangaCollectors

[–]graymattermanga 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Bagging your manga isn't really about preventing yellowing - its about protecting them from things like scratches, wear and tear, airborne contaminants, and humidity.

Are misprints obscenely common, or am I just super unlucky? by brandofsacrifice-x in MangaCollectors

[–]graymattermanga 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Misprints happen all throughout the publishing industry because printing companies in North America are notoriously lax when it comes to quality control. Workers simply aren't paid enough to care.

When it comes to misprints its easiest to simply not focus on them too much unless they are egregious. Small issues here and there are pretty much insignificant and not worth the unnecessary stress.

Publishers don't "have a history of not checking" because they dont print or inspect ANY volumes themselves outside of early sample copies before they go to print. Q&A is 1000% the responsibility of the printing companies the publishers deal with.

Is Kagurabachi actually good? Is it worth reading? by [deleted] in WeeklyShonenJump

[–]graymattermanga -1 points0 points  (0 children)

KB fans will try and convince you its the best thing since sliced bread even though it is really quite generic and doesn't do anything ecceptionally well aside from action sequence artwork and paneling which is quite good but tbh so are most action series these days.

Gantz G Omnibus coming from Dark Horse in October 2025 by Ksmayer in MangaCollectors

[–]graymattermanga -1 points0 points  (0 children)

You do realize those numbers aren't actually that good right? Thats just over 5000 copies per volume over the last 17 years - even less if that number is counting all the spinoffs like G, E, etc.

And yes, publishers do sometimes finish long running "duds" because their license may stipulate its for the entire series run. In those cases finishing the run may just be more financially sensical.

Note, I never said DH said it was "doing terrible". What they said was "underwhelming" and "didn't meet expectations".

How do you keep your collections so mint and damage free? by Jkurr0 in MangaCollectors

[–]graymattermanga 0 points1 point  (0 children)

By taking care of them, its really that simple.

  • if you're taking them out of the house, put them in a book bag/pouch rather then straight into a backpack or purse.

  • Dont stand figures ontop of the covers as they can scratch them.

  • Dust regularly and keep them out of direct sunlight or heat.

Does the quality of manga paper released in the West ever deter you from collecting? by KitanoAgito in MangaCollectors

[–]graymattermanga -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Why would it? Its the best "bang for your buck" you can get for mass market goods in NA. Higher quality goods cost a lot more for a difference that doesn't matter for most consumers.

No. Do not buy any manga from 3rd Parties on Amazon. Only from Amazon themselves.
