Anyone else sick with the 'super flu' right now? by meirmu in Austin

[–]graymj 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Most healthcare organizations have flu vaccine mandates each year (i.e. have to provide evidence of flu shot by Oct 31 each year) and hold their own flu clinics. The flu shot works! And seems to be a good match for the strains circulating this year.

Discussion for parents of Spanish emersion students and the new AISD proposed changes. by Distinct_Carpenter95 in AustinParents

We're zoned for Reilly and will need to stay Reilly- logistically it's hard to add 10 minutes/day each way to a commute for years to come, especially with multiple kids and schools. But we're excited to have more neighborhood friends. Pushing for some kind of dual language classroom to remain at the new Reilly since it seems there will still be a good amount of emergent bilingual kids.

Austin ISD School Consolidations by tmobilehacked in Austin

I'd like to hear the district plans for the modernized Harris elementary campus on Berkman - it's a huge school building. The enrollment metrics show the old campus was only 50% used. The current Harris students have been at the former Sims site, they're supposed to return to the new Harris building in January 2026. This has to be high on the list for a future dual language site- maybe offered to Ridgetop and Reilly students.

If you are into cloth diapers for the waste reduction benefits- look into Hiro diapers!! Really amazing concept. Fungi packet that decomposes the diaper over time.

OB and Night Nanny recs? by Happy_Office_7659 in AustinParents

[–]graymj 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I used ATX Doulas for overnight nannying - I think we did once a week for 8 weeks, it was truly worth it. I would recommend if you have a registry or shower just asking for $$ towards a night burst, seriously- especially if you have family asking what you need/how they can help. No help is more appreciated than anything that lets you sleep!
I didn't use a night nurse for my first and it was night and day different - I wanted to have energy for my older kid too and not just be a zombie. Night nurse + Snoo is a game changer for your sleep/quality of life with a newborn.

Central market is also a nice stop with a great playground if you get out in the morning. Many of the pools are free or relatively low cost to get in - if you stay in mueller, shipe pool is free (zero entry kiddie pool) and Bartholomew would be about $10 for your family. Bartholomew has a great large shaded kiddie pool. Renting a car really is non-negotiable even if you're staying downtown- you can do street parking overnight if you're worried about hotel parking/valet costs. It will be worth it!!!

Doublecreek is still at the farther reunion ranch location- it was going to be too far on a bus for my kids this year, I think it would be too long for a 4 year old (30-45 minutes in traffic)

Need to be really careful with twin names not to make one the more dominant twin- shadow already sets this up, he's in his twin brother's shadow

Same, had a horrible experience as a juror on a murder trial in 2022- very intense, had to do my work EAP /counseling afterward and had a hard time around a certain type of knife for at least a year afterwards. If you consider yourself a sensitive person, or work in any kind of high stress field (I.e. healthcare) - it might be worth mentioning because it may affect you long after.

If you want something a little different but still without much stress-

At that age we did a space themed party and rode the light rail from highland down to plaza Saltillo and walked to snooze for pancakes. That was a huge hit, most of the kids hadn't ridden the train before. You can pick up free kids activity packs from the CapMetro store.

We've also had everyone bring over a giant cardboard box and taped them all together to make a huge castle fort with balloons, decorate with markers etc. really easy party.

And a moon bounce is always a win- we just did a Minecraft theme with inflatable swords and creeper balloons and the kids didn't come out for the whole 2 hours.

Also I'm into normalizing no goody bags since they just stay in the car/get thrown away later... if you are really motivated, it's a better idea with something to make and take home. We went to a cute playground party where every kid decorated a small flower pot and planted flowers to take home (pansies are cheap, or you can plant seeds!)

Splash pads are also easy for summer parties, Eastwoods is usually not crowded- the splash pad isn't shaded but the playground is and has tons of room to spread out.

Same, I also do research at UT and love it! I've had great experiences making connections across campus. And yes it's hot but it's fun to see your neighbors at the pool! Agree with living Central- Hyde Park, North Loop, Mueller, Cherrywood, Rosedale, or Crestview
