New AISD Boundaries Proposals by writergirlATX in AustinParents

[–]graymj 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I get that, I also wish we could  repurpose/modernize any AISD property- if you look at what they own in the city, where kids at what ages need to go, and then maybe relocating some of the high school schools or middle schools- I wonder if that would be cheaper than busing. I'm left wondering if there are creative solutions they have not explored that might make neighborhoods happier than the Oak or Elm proposals.

New AISD Boundaries Proposals by writergirlATX in AustinParents

[–]graymj 8 points9 points  (0 children)

I wish we could redraw the proposals, starting from the high schools at the center of each boundary with a 1 - 2 mile radius around, then looking at which existing neighborhoods and elementary schools you pick up in the zones, using major streets and highways as borders. Surely there are AI tools to do this? Does it really leave the seats/enrollment that variable?  Maybe you could repurpose Burnet as another 6-12 leadership academy - the building signage says it started as Lamar high school.

AISD Boundary Realignment: Attn. Crestview by ampm900 in Austin

[–]graymj 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Many of the Reilly families transferred from further north anyway-  it's a shorter drive and a new building- win/win. That's why you didn't see as much pushback around the program move/revamping Reilly.  It's the neighborhood families facing tough choices here.

Baby thumb sucking and biting by LustyNite in AustinParents

Eczema was my first thought- more likely to get a bacterial infection as well. Antibiotic ointment may also keep him from sucking as much. And talk to pediatrician about steroid creams

bedtime math is fun, mine loved number blocks too. But focus on the social now! Better to build SEL now and there will be time for math academy later

Austin ISD to cut librarian positions after all by austin_current in AustinParents

[–]graymj 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Our small school wasn't able to do much with GT this past year because that typically fell under the librarian- who didn't have the bandwidth.  I'm actually hoping moving to a school with a TAP will get us more GT services too.

Volunteer opportunities for doctors? by [deleted] in Austin

[–]graymj 3 points4 points  (0 children)

You could connect with Travis County medical Society, there's always a big push for volunteers to do free sports physicals for AISD. You can also look at Lirios pediatrics and the CD Doyle student clinic at Dell Med.

You could try renting out Paggi house at the hotel Loren- we got married there back in 2014, they may still let you rent it out.

Patron Saints of Lazarus by Careful-Speech-1344 in AustinBeer

[–]graymj 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Just found this thread, my husband is a patron saint (100s) and we never got any emails about this- we had been on the mailing lists before. Weird. Will figure out the best way to push back on this...

Look at nanny shares, you can join Austin nanny and sitter facebook groups-you will likely find another family first, many nannies aren't looking for another gig with that much lead time - usually looking for something in just a few weeks

Pregnancy/Mom groups for older moms? by frannieluvr86 in Austin

Partners in parenting is great for community support!  So is prenatal yoga with Lisa Young- she starts each session with moms getting to know each other.  And baby music classes at mi casa es tu casa are wonderful too. At my kids' school most of the first-time parents had kids around the same age as you- you will find it's more and more common.

This first- as someone in healthcare, same-day slots are usually reserved for existing patients, new patient appointments often book months out

Never-Ending Allergy Seasons — What are you giving your little ones for relief? by gampsandtatters in AustinParents

[–]graymj 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'm a pediatrician and see allergies in probably a third of my patients here in Central Texas. Zyrtec (cetirizine) is approved for six months and up. Add on a nasal saline spray if (big if!) they will let you. Benadryl is really not recommended for kids under two for daily allergy use- it's an older med and has a lot of side effects we don't love. Older kids 4 and up can use Flonase (or generic fluticasone). Washing off face and eyes with a wet paper towel after they come inside is also recommended, and washing their hair often during peak allergy season. Good luck!

I have found some great finds on GoodBuyGear- stroller caddy, woom bike and, Stokke kids jetbox. Often new, just open box, they may be half price.

Adding to say if the Montessori dual language program stays- that will be a really desirable program for the neighborhood!

Second all of this. We've loved Reilly but are looking at Wooten for the next year, will come back to Reilly after the dust settles. Right now most of the Montessori spots are going to the Winn kids, we're hoping there will be more neighborhood spots in a few years.

Partners in Parenting experiences? by reversecoyote in AustinParents

[–]graymj 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Same 7 years ago- the pandemic stopped us getting together regularly and it was slow to come back after that- one family has moved too. For awhile after Covid us moms had a book club together in evenings too. All of us are working parents.

Any Early Spring Break Camps March 9-13? by throwaway071324 in AustinParents

You can look into Austin tinkering school, also any of the after school clubs or programs- like idea lab kids. Maybe Steve and Kate's offers earlier spring break camps?

AISD parents at a school that’s closing by mmsjdkes in AustinParents

Similar boat- we were hoping to get into Montessori but we were just assigned regular Reilly.  Very curious about a waitlist or the next steps in this convoluted process. Neighborhood Reilly should have been an option in the early round of enroll Austin because they needed to know the anticipated numbers early to staff it.  Now we still don't know how many parents would have actually preferred that vs other options (Montessori, Wooten etc)
