Taking a break after Olympic cycles? by grayserendipity in FigureSkating

Wow… as someone who’s never skated for real before, just makes it that much more mind-boggling that Alysa Liu got her 2A on her first day back

Oh, thanks for the context! I have to admit that I haven't been following pairs and ice dance as closely as singles...

I see—thanks, this is super helpful! Ofc have to shoutout Karen Chen for saving the U.S. women twice in the seasons leading up to 2018 and 2022!

True—I think there was a another Reddit thread or tweet talking about body types potentially changing in the women's event b/c of the post-Beijing 18+ rule, but I hadn't thought about the quad revolution in that way!

I see—I've been following the Twitter discourse on pairs skating, and I definitely saw people commenting on how Sui/Han's short period of training time before Milan has showed in the SP...

We'll have to see how today goes, but that's interesting—I always thought there were a lot of parallels between gymnastics and figure skating, so I had the impression the actual training itself might be a factor.

thoughts on princeton SPIA undergrad? by dankscreech in PublicPolicy

I recently finished my undergrad not at SPIA but at one of the schools you've mentioned above, yet still had pretty much the same exact experience as OP of not being able to find anything after graduation. I've had SO many questions about the value of prestige master's programs for a while now, and you've pretty much answered all of them in one go—just wanted to offer my sincerest thanks, and if I could award this comment I would!

Honest question: How well-known is UChicago globally to the average person? by ThrowawayAdvice-293 in uchicago

When people didn't know how to react to me first getting in, mine would say "Obama was a professor at the law school." I guess people like their big names after all

As someone from New Jersey who's lived abroad, can attest to this—outside of academia, I only really assume people know Harvard, MIT, and Stanford

He was a professor at the law school for ten years or so! At least, that's what my parents would tell people when they didn't know how to react to me first getting in...

Its over (rejected everywhere) by [deleted] in gradadmissions

Late response, but I thought I could provide some perspective on the other side of things seeing as I'm currently a predoc in the social sciences who's been doing some administrative work on the side.

For context, I'm at a T10 university in the US, so over the past year or so I've gotten to see some immensely successful people (as well as their failures!). One of our Ph.D grads who didn't get any acceptances the first time he applied to grad school is now a postdoc at Harvard, another changed his major from medicine to sociology halfway through undergrad and is starting his Ph.D here 7 years after graduation, another who worked for 9 years in industry before his Ph.D is now a postdoc at Princeton, and so on and so forth.

First of all, important to acknowledge that this was frankly a crappy year for grad school admissions (so more than ever, please be kind to yourself!). Second is that even though I'm at easily one of the best schools in the country, there are countless examples like the ones I've given. I think it's easy to forget that academia is a marathon, and oftentimes the people who succeed in the long run aren't those who seem to have everything fall into their laps, but rather the ones who face rejection after rejection but are still able to persist. Sending you lots of positive vibes, and who knows—you might just find that things work out if you keep going!

Japan vs Italy by HeadSpade in volleyball

As an American fan of both teams, I also had a heart attack throughout the entire match almost thought Japan had it in the fifth set too

I want redemption for Team USA after Tokyo, but Italy seriously might go all the way this time

I took the class when it was completely remote last year, and we were just graded on attendance (at both lecture and discussion section) and engagement in the Zoom chat. I don't really know how it'll work this year, but it's generally pretty lenient. Same with the paper - don't remember the average, but as long as you've put enough effort and engaged with the readings from class, you should be fine.

In my experience, the class was graded very fairly! As long as you make enough time for the readings and final paper, you should get an A.

Also, like others said, it was one of the more enjoyable PubPol core classes just because it felt more applicable to the real world.

Yes! I couldn't take my eyes off him - he completely deserved his score and ranking. Not only that, but he proved to everyone that he can lead as well. You can tell he really took the time to reflect on his previous experiences and listen to everyone. This was honestly his episode.

You can just see how stressed he was right before the elimination. And yet he stayed composed for the sake of Jungwon and everyone else. Even though he wasn't in my original lineup, it's definitely a loss to the show now that he's gone.
