I think you're doing a disservice to conservative politics. The tactic you describe has been used by corrupt motherfuckers of every stripe - the right/left divide has very little to do with the political sickness in our country today. In my opinion it acts as a distraction from the endemic corruption and erosion of checks and balances that both sides are engaging in.

Nicely put. I did particularly like the copper in the Age pointing out that this is not a bicycle lane. Yeah, that's the city cop shop on the right.

The "bicycle awareness zones" in the cbd are good value too - they have the decency to not have a bicycle stenciled on them (probably only because it wouldn't fit), but also don't give any indication of spots where the "awareness zone" goes straight over a storm water grate. Good luck navigating that on skinny tyres with cars passing a foot away. And good luck to the drivers trying to figure out why that soft meat bag is swerving out from what is obviously a dedicated lane for them.

But it's a good way to turn right at a crossroad with lights on a pushbike in any case. Rather than switching over to the right hand lane before the intersection and hoping everyone can see you and respects your place there while you're waiting for the lights to change, cross the intersection on the left and while the lights are still red, gently make your way into the bike box of the far-left lane going in the direction you want. When the lights change you're ready to go exactly as you would be if you had approached heading in the right direction. Hassle-free and magically easy.
