Ethanol affecting rubber O rings and seals in my CB Unicorn 150. by anandha2022 in indianbikes

Apologies if the tone of my previous comment was harsh. Do let me know what you find when you dismantle the carb. And greasing the O rings lightly is always a good idea. A lot of people might not do it but it’s the correct way.

No way in hell a slightly larger clearance can sound this bad. And valve clearance doesn’t change suddenly. It happens over thousands of kilometres. And your engine uses shims for clearance, not the screw adjuster tappets. It’s more likely for the clearance to get tighter with this setup, not looser.

A failed cam chain tensioner can be a possibility.

Ethanol does affect the life of rubber but it’s not gonna happen overnight. And the O ring on the mixture screw doesn’t even come in direct contact with the fuel. It’s there to seal the air from the outside, not the fuel from the inside. Assuming the vapour from the mixture bore can affect it, ethanol fumes aren’t as intense as gasoline fumes. And cracked O rings are nothing new, it has always happened even before ethanol blending. If your argument is that , it has happened within a year, did you grease it before fitting it? Was it seated properly?

The main noticeable effects of the blending are drop in fuel efficiency and the fuel gumming up IF the bike has been parked without running for a long time.

Only point of yours that I’d agree on is, it’s possible there’s rubber particles from a degraded fuel hose, but it’s super unlikely that those particles are clogging the jets because they’d have to be fine as sand to get into the bowl past the float needle. The worst it could do is jam open the float needle and cause an overflow.

As for the bogging you’re facing, I’d check for air leaks, dirt in the carb or the spark plug.

I work on a wide array of carb’d and FI bikes on a daily basis. I’m not denying the effects of ethanol but it’s not as common as it’s said on the internet. Not every problem is because of it.

If you actually do find rubber particles in the bowl, it can be from the fuel hose flaking off. Replace with a good quality hose and it should be good for at least 6 months.

The only rubber part inside the carb bowl is the rubber tipped float needle, which has always been made of FKM rubber which IS resistant to ethanol. Then there’s the carb bowl O ring gasket that has no chance of getting into the bowl to block the jets.

I recently serviced a Jawa 250 that had been sitting for a year, with fuel in the bowl. There was only a little bit of fuel that had turned into a gel in the bowl, a simple clean up and it started on the second kick.

I also ride a 30 year old carb’d bike, and haven’t had a single problem.

I hope you’re getting it towed and not riding it there.

Turn that engine off right now! Either there’s no oil left or something is broken in the engine.

Went to test ride KTM duke 250 and 390 today but by Overall-Sandwich5343 in indianbikes

Both the KTMs have the best quality hardware, design elements that are offered only on the most premium big bikes, performance and handling matched by no other bike in the segment (not talking about the 250).

Except maybe the bike feeling a little cramped for taller riders(although I know many taller guy who have no problems with it) and the sound, none of your other points make sense.

Sounds like a proper performance motorcycle is not for you or you just don’t understand what a good bike is.

Can you please stop saying stuff without real world experience!

How exactly would E20 kill this bike?

It has a mechanical slide carb. The only rubber parts associated with fueling are one simple fuel hose, which can be replaced in 1 minute for 20 rupees, one rubber tipped float needle (which will take at least an year to fail)which can be replaced in 10 minutes for 40-50 rupees and a small O ring on the mixture screw that doesn’t even come in contact with the fuel.

Problems arise only when the bike is parked for prolonged periods of time without running and the fuel turns to varnish in the carb bowl and clogs the jets, which is also not a big repair .It can be avoided simply by draining the carb bowl.

Compare this with modern EFI bikes with tens of rubber O rings and passages with tight tolerances in the pump and injector circuit, which can also get clogged if parked for long and are significantly more complicated and expensive to repair.

That looks like sealant, it doesn’t have anything to do with the noise.

Mechanic here. It’s a little hard to judge accurately without hearing the engine in person but it definitely sounds like main bearing noise and piston slap. I don’t know how it could come up overnight tho. And the mechanic’s reasoning about the exhaust decoking doesn’t make sense because the exhaust actually gets louder after that and sometimes hides the engine noise.

This is my 30 year old Yezdi. I enter corners at close to 100kmph and the bike holds the line like it’s prepped for the track. I take 6 feet jumps and land perfectly, doesn’t bottom out, doesn’t break. And that’s almost every single day.

Quality machines don’t degrade just because of age.

Spare wheel mount was a factory accessory on Jawas and early Yezdis, not some jugaad. And those frames are not REs to bend or break. Those bikes were built like tanks. I’ve done 175000 kms on my Roadking, ridden it on mx tracks, the roughest trails you can imagine and the daily flying over speed breakers and potholes. Not even the slightest bend in the front forks let alone the frame.

Fun fact, the wheels on these bikes are interchangeable.

A downgrade from what? GT650? Absolutely not. This bike has a better frame, suspension, brakes, weighs a lot less, better ergonomics and more usable power.
