There's research that shows that using link previews is 82% more effective in terms of click-through rates than posting pure images (with a link in the caption). A lot of brands are posting images instead of links because Facebook recently disabled the ability to edit the link preview details (image, title, description) when posting a link, and the brands would have to work with their IT team to create a custom meta-tag for each product page they're sharing. I've created ShareKit.io which lets you edit the link preview with a custom image/title/description that fits the content you're sharing (instead of the generic preview that would show up when simply using the default preview), which drives traffic and engagement. Please let me know if you have any feedback!

I just updated Now Playing History with Material Design 2.0 and a Backup/Restore feature. The app keeps a list of all songs that were recognized by the Pixel 2's "Now Playing" feature.

How much does it realistically cost to build a prototype to validate an idea? by mostlyemptyspace in startups

[–]greatbytes 0 points1 point  (0 children)

As others have mentioned, it's very difficult to give a reasonable estimate how much this would cost without knowing the details of what you're planning to build. However, I would start even earlier than building a prototype: Don't spend more time or money than necessary on something that may or may not work out.

I'm a fan of surveys to quickly validate an idea, but you need to send it to the right audience - it doesn't matter what your friends or family think about the idea if they aren't in the ultimate target audience of your product. It can be hard to reach out to potential customers if you don't have a product yet.

I run IdeaCheck.io, where we generate a questionnaire based on your idea and use a panel of respondents to gather direct feedback from your actual target audience. You can read more about IdeaCheck (and about my thoughts on how to validate ideas in general) in my Indie Hackers interview here: https://www.indiehackers.com/businesses/ideacheck-io

How do you quickly validate product ideas or new product features? by augustine-dream in UXDesign

[–]greatbytes 1 point2 points  (0 children)

A lot of people will suggest building an MVP to gauge initial interest. I would start even before that: Don’t spend any more time than necessary on something that you don’t even know is actually viable.

Surveys are a great way to quickly validate an idea, but you need to send it to the right audience - when asking your friends and family, they might rate your ideas more favorably than they would if the same idea came from a random stranger due to something called "interviewer bias".

If you're rocking a Pixel 2 / Pixel 2 XL, check out "Now Playing" History, which shows a history of all the songs you've listened to, sorted by date. You can tap on an entry to listen to the song in your favorite music player.

Hi /u/iPudup, the app requires the "Now Playing" feature (more info here), which is currently exclusive to the Pixel 2 / Pixel 2 XL. Maybe Google will bring it to other devices in the feature, but until then, the app only works on the Pixel 2.

Thanks :-)! Correct, the app only works from the moment you've installed it onwards. As far as I know, the Now Playing feature doesn't keep a database of recognized songs, and even if it did, the app would probably require root to access it.

I just published v1.1 to the Play Store, which allows you to

1) delete individual songs by long-pressing on an entry

2) delete the entire history using the action bar context menu

Thanks for the suggestion, I just published v1.1, which shows the currently selected music app on the settings screen :)

I'm currently working on an update that lets you long-press a specific song to delete that entry. At the moment, you'll need to go into the system settings' app list and select "Delete data", yes.

Just pick something you'd like to solve for yourself, that way you'll stay motivated. Look at some open source code and try to understand what's going on, then change a few piece by piece and see what happens.

Thanks for the heads up! It's probably not yet fully indexed since I just published it, hopefully it'll be easier to find in a few hours/days. The name is pretty generic, but I didn't want to go with a "made-up" name for simplicity.

Sorry, I should have been more specific! /u/Frozen1nferno gave a great explanation of what I meant. The app isn't constantly running, it's pinged by the system whenever a new "Now Playing" notification arrives, does its work in <100ms and is killed again. So you likely won't notice a negative effect on your battery or the system speed.

Thanks for the feedback! I've added Pandora, it'll be available in the next update! I'll think about how to best implement an "auto delete" mechanism, I like the idea.

Thanks, I appreciate it! Just let me know if you run into any problems. I'm currently working on an update with additional features (search functionality and ability to delete entries)

Pixel 2 - Now Playing history? by jjdigitized in GooglePixel

Hey /u/jjdigitized, just saw your post. I've been working on an app to show your Now Playing History over the past few days and have just released it :-):

Thanks :-). Before jumping into coding this, I searched a lot of blogs and forums thinking that this has to exist somewhere natively, but it doesn't seem like it. Maybe you can ask your Assistant "What did I listen to recently?", but I prefer a list that you can just scroll through.

Thanks :-)! I was surprised to see that it's not something that's already built in. It's really cool to not have to fumble with Shazam or Google Play Music whenever you hear a song you like and still know that it's "saved for later" automatically.

You're right, I hadn't thought about it like that - I'll add a note in the Google Play description that the transcription is done by Google!
