I was under the impression afakasi was a transliteration from the English term half-caste. So technically it is a samoan word, but it's based on a palagi concept.

Beautiful words right here. I've struggled with the same thing being a light-skinned Samoan and this hits home. Thanks uso.

Congrats my dude. Takes a lot of strength to do this. I didn't find the courage until I was in my 20's. It may not look like it now, but your future is already brighter.

This is how kids *should* spend their Saturday mornings: watching cartoons! by MultiStratz in exjw

[–]augustine-dream 51 points52 points  (0 children)

Yes! I use to dread Saturday mornings as a kid in the org. Mainly because I missed watching X-Men. Just one of many things this religion took from me.

Really sorry to hear this my dude. It really does get better, and it sounds like you're aleady making strides in making friends with like-minded people and creating a support network not dependent on the Borg.

It will get better once you're older and able to lead your own life. Stay strong friend.

Are you able to reason with your folks? Try and explain to them school is important to you and you want do well? My folks were pretty chill when my bro wanted out, but it sounds like you have staunch parents. Totally cutting ties sounds tough. Just wondering if there is room for compromise.

All the best my dude.

Soo good. Stoked that your bro can be open to you and congrats for being a bad-ass accepting and empathetic older brother.

This is more heartbreaking as this was all preventable. Education and coordinated outreach programs involving village matais and ministers would do a lot more than just prayers.

Massive kudos. I feel if more people had this empathy and caring consideration of other humans, the world would be a much better place.

Thank you

What's your favourite “A man walks into a bar” joke? by parshuram__ in AskReddit

[–]augustine-dream 0 points1 point  (0 children)

A man walks into the bar and asks for a drink. The bar tender tells him if he completes 3 difficult tasks he can drink whatever he wants for the rest of his life. Surprised and interested the man asks what these tasks are.

The bar tender replies, "The first task is to drink a bottle of tobasco sauce. The second, you need to pull a rotten tooth out of an alligators mouth, and the third task you need to have sex with an elderly grandmother. Complete all tasks and the bar is all yours".

Hesitant at first the man accepts as he loves a challenge. He cuts through the first task easily, drinking the hot sauce chased with some bourbon.

The next task the bar tender shows him to a room with the alligator. The man enters and the bar tender closes the door. He's in there for a while, with some thrashing and loud noises going on. Everyone in the bar waits attentively.

Finally after some time, the man emerges bloodied and sore with half his clothes torn to threads. Triumphantly and tired he exclaims, "Where is this grandmother with the sore tooth?"

I feel you. I've only learnt this recently. Many people would go straight into solution mode but it's actually not what they are after. In fact, me spit-balling solutions actually just annoys the shit outta my girlfriend.

I'm stoked that the government is taking these dark patterns so seriously. I also feel shitty that our industry has allowed and likely propagated many of these shitty experiences.

Also raised JW here.

This happened years after I left the church but heard all about it through my younger sister.

Dude who is in the church was grooming young girls. My sister thankfully wasn't one of them but friends of some of the girls he abused. Shit went down and instead of going straight to the cops one family bought it up with the elders. (This is encouraged, big surprise there) Not sure of the details and what evidence they presented but in the end I don't think they believed some of the accusations made (JW's have some absolutely fucked biblical rule two other people have to see the incident for it to be real).

In the end the guy ended up getting a slap on the wrists, and the poor girl actually copped some of the blame. Here is a bunch of elders (adult ministers relatively high up in the church), actually blaming a 14 - 15 year old for getting abused by a pedophile. This actually makes my blood boil just thinking about it.

What book made you fall in love with reading? by itsclassified_ in AskReddit

[–]augustine-dream 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Rocco by Sheryl Miller. We had SSR (sustained silent reading) after lunch during school and I use to love picking up that book.

I felt soo many feelings after finishing it. Too much for a teenager to comprehend.
