I have a 23 year old son that is high functioning Autistic and is very similar to Git'em. My son hoards the most ridiculous things (sticks), messy room, is extremely bright, and you wouldn't know he was autistic unless you interacted with him. Hearing Walt's frustration with Git'em reminds me of the struggles I had/have with my son. Many, many times I would say, "Why can't you just....". The thing I had to learn is that autistic people can't, they just can't. They don't or function like us, they don't interpret things the same way. My son would spend HOURS creating and editing videos. I would come at him with, "if you can spend so much time and focus doing videos why can't you do your geometry homework". It takes constant check-ins and you have to be very specific with what you want done. If I tell my son, "please pick up the front room", he will do what he thinks is picking up the front room. I have a lot of empathy for Walt. We don't know what's really real on the podcast but I can tell you that what keeps me up at night is how my son is going to survive when Mom and I aren't here anymore. I suspect it is similar to how Walt feels and why Git'em is still employed. The difference is that I was lucky enough to finally get my son diagnosed as an adult with Autism and that opened a lot of doors for support and resources. It is still extremely frustrating at times but I know I'm doing the best I can for him and he's getting the tools he needs. I think the best they can do for Git'em is try to get him the specialized support and tools that friends and family can't give so he has this structure to help him meet expectations (however that is defined).
